Winter hang report: 4-layer IX UQ

Made a roadtrip up to PA to spend Thanksgiving with family, and came prepared to get a few nights outside. The forecast called for a low of 28° at night, so before it got dark, I set up camp back in the woods along a small but wonderful sounding stream.

I didn't actually go to bed until after 10pm, and it was 32.5° on the back porch, with heavy frost already on the cars. The hammock warmed up quickly after I got in it, and once I got nestled in, felt pretty comfortable between my down TQ & IX UQ. I figured 4-layers of IX should be good to around freezing, and anything below that would be a bonus.

Well, it's definitely good to freezing, and was cool but still comfortable down to at least
the 22° I awoke to this morning! My butt and back were cool, but not uncomfortably so, although if I had a pad with me, I would have used it.

I realize everyone's got their own limits and levels of comfort, but thought this info might help someone who's curious about IX.

Just out of curiosity, how much does the four layer weigh? I am not typically concerned with weight, I am just interested in comparing it to the weight of the cottage industry made underquilts. Also, how bulky is it? Keep in mind this is coming from a girl using a Big Agnes synthetic bag and 3/4 self inflating pad both of which a bit on the bulky side.

Sunny, I made a 3 layer 3/4 length earlier this week. It's lite. I'm not a gram counter, so I use the bathroom scale. 154.4 plus sleeping bag equals 158.9=4.5 lbs. 154.4+ insultex uq=154.4~<1. Like I said its light. Folded and rolled its about 18"x6". I might try it outside tonight.

Thanks for the info! I have been debating using IX in an UQ of some kind and this will help with my plans...

Thanks for the info. The weight is comparable to my current bag/pad combo. For the price of the materials I think I can make two 4 layer UQ below the cost of a single cottage made UQ & still be "light" for us non-gram counters. This definitely make it affordable.

As for size & weight - I still haven't weighed the UQ, but I can tell you it packs down pretty well. I can roll it into a 5" x 16" roll or fold it into a 12" square that's about 4" thick.
