I tend to use Schmetz needles in anything between a 10 and 12. These sizes tend to be for lighter weight materials. If you look up HF member RamblinRev - he has a series of videos on gear making and has a small section on needles. If you are using grosgrain for your shock cord on the sides I would probably suggest the 12. If its simply rolled edges I believe you're safe with 10 or 11. Hope this helps.
I keep meaning watch his videos... I just put a twelve in the one I had I realized was to big....
Needle size is a non issue in my opinion. A needle which is too small for the project will break or bend. But there is a wide wide latitude of sizes. I usually run 10-14 depending on what I have on hand. More important than size is quality and sharpness. At least that's what I base my choices on. Schmetz are my needle of choice.
i've used a 9 and 11 and both worked fine...i think a 9 is in the machine right now. if i sew anything other than nylon i'll move up in number
I like the small 9, but it's got to be NEW. For some reason, if it's been used on something else, it tends to sort of stick and then the thread starts doing some awful things.
I confess I use 14 as my standard, but I make sure they're sharp.
On my machine I find that too large a needle on thin material causes puckering, so I tend to use an 11 for most things. Webbing or multiple layers of heavier fabric I will switch to a 14 but it may not be necessary, I just don't want to bend one if I can help it. Schmetz
Thanks for the replies, I think I had at least a 14 maybe larger, it just seemed with the 1.1 nylon it seemed large, but it may have been the sharpness issue....
