Well I went by Joann's today and they only had 1 kind of ripstop, so I bought enough to do this project. I leave for Ireland in 8 days, so I don't think I'll have time to order something calendered unless I have it overnighted for $40 more. Ouch. I really want to make a quality quilt, but I need it quick. Does anybody do super cheap overnight shipping?

I'm all set to pull the trigger on DIYGearSupply for some real 1.1. They list forest green as specifically calendered and downproof, but the other colors are listed only as DWR. Are the DWR colors still downproof?

I tried the sheet folding thing, and 54 inches seems about right. Enough for me to spread out comfortably. Progress moves forward as planned on project "Bigfoot" as soon as my materials arrive.
I never thought I would have this much fun sewing.

Torture: (n.) The state of DIY projects experienced when one sits for the better part of week, rapidly approaching the out-of-country camping trip of a lifetime, staring helplessly at 13 ounces of premium down, a yard of nanoseeum, and various other snaps and cordlocks belonging to a soon-to-be topquilt, whilst one waits for DIY Supply Gear to ship one's 1.1oz ripstop nylon so that one may begin work on said DIY topquilt.

Euphoria: (n.) Opening packages of DIY materials before the mailman leaves then trying to explain the awesomeness of what you are about to make to a on enthusiastic observer.

FINALLY. I got some 1.1 in the mail today and promptly went to work. I spent about an hour and a half and got all the pieces cut up. I had a little trouble figuring out which side of the ripstop was calendered. Both sides looked shiny to me. Even if I didn't, the pieces are symmetrical so I can just flip one over. I was able to tape the ripstop down on my hardwood floor so I could draw and cut the body pieces, but the netting was a little trickier. My final solution was to mark 2.5" sections with Scotch tape and cut along the counter edge like so:

I found it to be pretty effective, although not perfect. But it's good enough for the type of government work I'm doing. So now I'm looking at spacing and sewing all the baffles on both sides, stuffing the down, and stitching it all shut nice and pretty before Wednesday lunchtime. Here's to a DIY marathon tomorrow!

Disaster.
My sewing machine broke. I was sewing along beautifully and noticed a sudden decline in stitching speed, and then a nice crack. I quit and took her apart to figure out what went wrong and the motor pulley for the belt drive was in two pieces.

Sorry to hear about the machine failure... Hopefully, it's a cheap part and easy repair!

I'm thinking the 1991 Singer has run her course.
