Question: 1.9 or Supplex
On the Speers Hammock site, Ed recommends person weighing up to 200 lbs. can use 1.9 oz ripstop nylon for the hammock body. He also recommends supplex for person weighing between 200 and 250 pounds.
I am new to hammocking, thus am not sure what I should chose or what will really work.
I weigh 210 pounds.:)
can anyone out there help me.
Thanks in advance for the posts and advice.
I use 1.9 untreated for my 220+ self plus 10-15 pounds of gear without any issues. It stretches a little, but that is all I have seen.
Smee told me that they tested hammock designs using 1.1 untreated without any problems and he is around 200lbs.
I like 1.9. I think Speer is thinking in terms of safty factor. Much like all other gear manufactors have too in these legal days.
Thanks, Hammock Engineer. I was REALLY hoping someone would say something like that. I want to use 1.9oz ripstop b/c I can find it in woodland camo.
I am going to start making my first DIY hammock in the next week to week and a half. I will let everyone know how it goes and will try to get some pics up too.
No not camo. Don't worry about. Just remember to hem the edges first. I learned that one the hard way. I also inspect my hammock from time to time to look for signs of wear. I use $1 walmart fabric and swap out test hammocks a lot.
I am taking a 1.9 oz hammock on my thru. I will have a couple in reserve just in case.
I'm 220 but started hanging at 235, no problems with the 1.9.
Oh man, you shouldn't have said that. :p BTW, I found some 2.2 in olive for my hammock. A little heavier than I really need, probably, but better safe than dropped. Again.

I'm switching to 1.9 ounce ripstop from now on. So go for the 1.9 ounce stuff.
If you do decide to use Supplex, there is plenty for sale on Ebay. Just make sure they state the weight. I got some really heavy stuff from Ebay.
Why didn't I want to say that? I am missing something apparently.

Here's a good price on Woodland Camo:
I've looked everywhere for 1.9 oz Digital Camo. No luck.
Waiting for Just Jeff to unleash some of that Olive Drab.
