Mt Rogers conditions
Hey folks - I'm considering hitting Mt Rogers this weekend with my 8 year old. Anyone have current conditions up there? Nighttime temps near the shelter? Know where the ponies are this time of year? I assume that stream has good water year round.
He asked to go to Mt Rogers but I'm also thinking of somewhere closer, like Uhwarrie. I know it's not as nice, but it's also not 5 hours away.
I was there last weekend. I stayed at the Bearcreek campgrounds. The weather was really nice during the day. Highs in the upper 60's to low 70's, low temps in the 50's.
Typical Mt Rogers weather. As soon as I headed home and got on I-81 the temps started to soar to the upper 80's
BTW there was plenty of water on the hike up from Elk Garden to Thomas Knob Shelter. The water at the shelter just started back flowing within the past week per a volunteer worker. The other water hole up by Crest trail ahs been flowing the whole time
ewker has the most current news on the water sources near thomas knob.
when i was there a few weeks ago the best running source of the 3 i most often use (thomas knob shelter, rhodo gap, & intersection of pine mt trail & crest horse trail) the one at rhodo gap was running best.
but they've probably had some rain since then.
i would find it hard to believe that the creek below wise shelter would ever be dry. it has a pretty good flow. and you probably won't have to be careful on the ice at the edge this time of year<g>.
but i can guarantee that it'll be noticeably cooler in the mt rogers area than in uhwarrie... probably 10-15 degrees.
let us know if you have questions about any of the other trails.
and i'd be surprised if you didn't see the ponies.
oh yeah, the blue berries should be starting to get ripe maybe.
jeff, i'm guessing you saw the resent thread were i reported on going to mt rogers & the link to pictures & videos in the 1st post.
not as of last weekend :(

Well, it turns out the wife is sick and I think my son is, too...so no trip this weekend. Have to settle for a movie and a quick day hike. :(
