Michigan hiker question
Hello everyone... I am not new to the mich. woods by any means, but very new to hiking.. Anyone have a few favorite hike trails they could let me in on?
I just need to get out and test the waters, myself and equipment..
Probably start with 2 dayers, is that a word?:) and build from there..
Thank you in advance....
an even quicker option is the S24O (Sub-24 hour-Outing) basically a trip to a local park/campground/forest; set-up your gear, sleep out overnight, and back home again... optimal for gear testing and introducing friends/family to camping, hiking is more of a build up to longer and longer trips by going on longer and longer trips kind of process.
Hope that helps, and have great fun!KM (alas, nowhere near Michigan)
Any good parks nearby you?
Check the Michigan DNR website for locations near you. Michigan Hang is taking place in a few weeks, your welcome to join us for some good times and lots of gear talk. (probably the best way to see all the gear, get hands on advice)
For me, testing my gear at home is the best solution. If things don't go as planned, I can run to the house. I'd hate to see you hike back 10 miles to have a failure of some kind. Test close to home or car. Get the kinks worked out there first. Practice setting up and taking down, different trees, different locations.
For hiking, there are lots of great areas. Most state parks, national forests have something to offer. The UP is loaded with backwoods trails.
Not sure where in the state your located?
Do a search for "Michigan Trails". The Manistee Trail Association has a good set of trails. The North Country Trail Association, has a link to Michigan trails. Plenty of great spots.
In the UP, Superior Hiking Trail is popular.
We will do some hikes around at the Michigan Hang, hope to see you there.
yep....a list of the preferred areas you would like to investigate (doesn't have to be real specific) would be most useful in helping to make some suggestions.
And two-dayers are probably the most common hikes going. For some people, they never do anything else...just short get-aways, and that is absolutely alright. :) I have a friend that made a committment to go every other weekend and he has been faithful to that comittment for over 4 years. HYOH/YMMV
I think most people on this forum are always looking for other like type people to hike, talk, and just share time with in nature. I know I am.
Why don't you post a thread requesting hiking partners in Michigan and see what kind of response you get? The request for get togethers don't have to be just full blown Hanging events....short hikes or small groups are the best things most of the time, and a whole easier to make happen.

Great ideas folks.. I am just south of the motorless city..:( Not sure if I could make it to the hang as of yet.. Ofcourse I never thought I would be sleeping in a black bird this soon either.. so anything could happen... Thank you for the invite though....
The Manistee River Trail. It's a twenty mile loop. Good two night trip with lots of places to hang and camp. I love this trail in the fall when the brown trout are running. Enjoy!
