Last Minute Brutal Cold ADK hang!
So a buddy of mine, Jamie "NFA" from the ADK mentioned that brutal cold was forecasted for this weekend. He, another buddy Bryce "Bster13" and I decided to do a last-minute road trip/campout, which I referenced in This Thread.
Bryce and I arrived at about 2pm on Sunday. It was already below zero when we arrived, and although it was nice and sunny the temp was falling fast. First order of business was to shovel out a couple parking spots and some paths. I actually shoveled all the way to the outhouses although I don't think anyone used them... well I left a roll of TP in a plastic bag for the next campers
Next we got busy getting camp set up. NFA arrived while we were in the middle of this, so I got him to do some videography to help me share my hammock setup for the night.
Here's the completed setup including tarp. I did build a bit of a snow wall to help block wind from the expected direction. I pitched the tarp lower and flatter than I usually would, and the hammock a bit lower than usual as well.
Bryce used a crazy poncho shelter.
NFA decided to use his trusty tent, as much to give us a backup in case the hammock or poncho was not working out as anything.
It was a fun trip. We decided not to bother with a campfire, instead just going for a walk whenever we got a bit chilly. Got to listen to the pond ice and trees snapping and popping in the cold, also got an unexpected serenade from a pack of coyotes around 3:15am.
NOAA claims we saw -36F. Our thermometer read -30 <shrugs>
One special shout-out to MacEntyre, I think the IX-insulated hammock sock really helped make this comfortable and do-able! Also a shout-out to Bryce (Bster13) and Jamie (NFA) for being a good combination of brave and stupid enough to join me!
