600FP down vs 800FP down
I was just wondering if anyone had some data on the weight difference between 600-fill and 800-fill down.
Say, for example, that I filled 2 similar quilts with the same volume of each...would one be lighter than the other, or would it only be an issue of warmth?
Also, is down the best possible warmth-to-weight ratio, or are any of the synthetics like Primaloft or Climashield comparable?
Thanks in advance.
The amount of down used to fill the volume would be 25% less with the 800fp down. For example a 80x40x2 UQ would take 10.6oz of the 600fp down but would only take 8 oz of the 800fp down.
It takes 8 ounces to fill 4800 cubic inches with 600 FP down, but it only takes 6 ounces of 800 FP down to fill 4800 cubic inches.
So, for the same volume it requires less weight of the 800 FP down. An ounce of down weights 1 ounce no matter the FP.
Synthetics vs Down
Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.
So how about the synthetics...is there any real advantage to them aside from providing insulation when they are wet and being quick drying? And as far as weight to warmth ratio...are we talking a couple degrees difference here between equal weights of say: IX or Primaloft vs 800+FP Down? Or is the difference in warmth pretty drastic?
