no-sew gathered end
Sorry if this has been brought up but my search doesn't show anything.
I have an urge to make a gathered end hammock, mostly to see if I can, and wanted to know if there is a way to do it without having to sew.
Probably would go with a single layer with a fabric 1.7ish fabric but would to a double if there's a way (maybe just two single layers stacked?).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

then all I do is take a lighter and carefully melt the edges.
I did this when first trying out hammocks - just temporary. I know others have discussed it as well. You will want to singe the edges of the nylon well, otherwise it will unravel on you. You can gather the ends of the hammock and lash them, then tie your suspension below the lashing (older diy hammock instructions on the forums will show how this is done.)
Better yet, buy a cheap thread injector and teach yourself to sew. Its really not that hard - I picked it up on my own a few years ago, just for hammock gear.
if your using whoopies,,take the end of the rope and tie in a half hitch and work it super tight..as you lay in it half hitch will keep tightening till it can't tighten any more. Just make sure you have a nice gathered end as you will probably not be able to get the half hitch undone. I dyi'ed some rip stop and it worked fine. If you have extra material left over at each end,,you can even, after tieing the half hitch and getting it totally tight,,tie the excess into a knot above the half hitch and trim excess off. no slippage with the knot of material above it even. But,,its not necessary if the half hitch is tightened tight enough, You can also melt the strings of the edge with a bic.
I did that without melting the edges. Sleeps nice, looks like crap.
