Down Bootie covers
All this talk about wearing your down booties around camp and how to keep the protected got me to thinking about my own so I came up with a removable cover alot like some of the commercial booties that are available have. I wanted to be able to wear my booties a little around camp and out for night time pee breaks and then remove the outer shell and keep my clean booties on in the hammock so this is what I made.
-I started with my Sierra Designs packable booties and cut a reflectix sole.
-Next I sewed it between two layers of heavy weight waterproof fabric.
-Next I cut the bottom out leaving 1/2" all around to attach the side to.
-I then attached a strip of the same heavy cordura fabric about 1.5" tall all the way around.
-Followed by another 1.5" strip of a lighter fabric to allow the shock cord to work.
I am going to give the bottoms the silicon treatment that was talked about in the other thread to add some grip and seal the seams. I think these things are bad *** and should keep my booties nice and clean. Thanks for checking them out:D
That's a great Idea. If we only had some snow.
Great idea..another cottage industry born.
That is a really nice outer shell. I like the way you enclosed the sole, a great way to bring the parts together.
I have been toying with this idea for a while but haven't been able to finalize a design until seeing yours
What did you use for the "heavy weight waterproof fabric?" It looks like a ripstop on the inner side and the same cordura on the bottom and sidewall.
Also, how light did you go on the uppers? Do you think a light 1.1 or .9 would work OK?
And I just noticed that little piece of grosgrain at the shock cord exit. Is just sewn onto the front (outer) face or does it fold over the channel? Is it just to provide support for the exit point--is there a grommet or a buttonhole there?
Sorry for all the questions, but these are REALLY impressive!
thanks for sharing,
Really nice! Great choice for multi-function!
I never really understood why companies build a down bootie that you can't sleep in by removing an outer, weatherproof shell.
You have built a better mousetrap! Nice presentation of it, too!
I like the design of the covers. Looks like a nice addition.
One question though - Have you had any problems with the bubbles in the reflectix popping while walking around in them?
Yep your right, cordura on the outside bottom and sides and a 1.9 or maybe a bit heavier waterproof ripstop on the inside. You could go much lighter on the upper portion but I used some 1.9 breathable ripstop I had on hand. The piece were the shock cord comes out is a piece of the cordura folded over inside and out and with a small hole melted in for the shock cord exit, no grommet or button hole. Thanks for your intrest:rolleyes:

Again, nice work.
