Peartree, the spread limiter near the bottom would eliminate the need for stronger hinges but it's up to you of course. I personally wouldn't want to pay $20 for a pair of extra heavy duty hinges when $2 worth of amsteel would fix it.
Hang in there!

FYI - since I was going to replace the knotty legs anyway, I had nothing to lose. I set the stand face down on its front side and standing on it, pulled up on the back leg about 2 feet from the bottom to unscientifically hand test its strength. Snap! Right at the bolt. Didn't pull hard at all...
Reset the stand face so I could do that knotty A leg... Snap! Right through the knot. Wow.
I believe, after new legs and hinges, I'll use limiters too. Regardless.
Thank you for your help.

This one was for my daughter who received the free HH Cub via Christmas special. First is a few hammock nights in the play room - then the backyard - then she wants to try a camping trip. Starting slow with her and want to keep it fun. Thanks for all who contributed to this thread - good stuff.

My first build
OK, so I'm a little late to the thread here, but I've been watching and reading it for a while. I went to the depot this morning and bought the materials. I'll be building it today. Hopefully pics to come later. I'm using pine 2x2's, going to cut the ends at an angle to avoid stabilizing with rope at the bottom, toprail fence post for the bar.
completed, working on pics

Here is my Turtle Dog Stand.
I used 3x2's, which I found at the local hardware store. I felt these would offer a little more support that 2x2's and they were only about .20 more for the 8 foot versions.
I used hppyfngy's specifications for the length and angles on the legs. Thanks!
I used a little heavier hinges and then used two S hooks on each side (These are rated at 170 pounds each.), so I should have plenty of support there.
I used 1" conduit for the ridge pole, 10 feet long, a 1/2 eye bolt on each end (set in one inch) with a 1 foot dowel in each end. I was wondering if the dowel should just be in the end or if it should run the entire length of the ridge pole?
I hung my Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro with the included rope kit (my whoopie's were way too long, even shortened all the way.).
Overall, these are surprisingly sturdy. I was wondering when I first was assembling these, but once I had them set correctly and then added weight, it all pulls together very nicely.
I will probably trim the excess off the hinge bolts.

I cut mine off with an angle grinder and made sure everything was nice and smooth so nothing could get snagged. Looks good!
-
My legs are 2X2, so that makes them 1.5" thick (The 2" is the rough cut, before smoothing them) add the hinge, a washer in the wood side, and I used locknuts. So a 2" bolt, I think is what I used. No cutting needed.......RR
