Ring Buckle Supports
I posted the instructions for making the ring buckle supports I had at Mt Rogers:
I like these much better than the Crazy Creek setup...when I use webbing, I'll keep using these until I find something better.
What do y'all think?
I went to the REI here in GSO and got four of those rings the other night. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet, though. Just by feel, I can tell they're lighter than my CC buckles.
I haven't had the issues with the buckles that you're reporting, really. I just don't ever tighten them down all the way. I think it might be a problem with my ULB though - you have to get an HH pretty tight or the ridgeline/bugnet sags all over you.
I'll definitely try out the rings, and I may switch over. Since I've already got my support cord tied with two bights, it won't be hard. Basically just directly sub the rings for the buckle.
I think I'll keep using the separate straps, though. With my "blackbishop's sack", you kinda have to take one off anyway. And it's not a big hassle for setup. Pretty quick and easy, actually. Plus those 'biners are fairly expensive, and I think I'd gain more weight using the rings AND 'biners than I've got now with the buckles.
I think I am going to try this with my next setup. Why not just eliminate the biners and run the strap thru the loop then to the rings?
That's what I do with my CC buckles, and I'll keep doing it unless I just feel like tossing some dough at those lightweight 'biners :p

i know what you mean about the cc buckles being hard to loosen some times.
With the blackbishop sack, I just leave one end out and wrap it around the bag.
Maybe it's just habit that I tighten the hammock all the way...I could probably get away with tightening it a bit less. But assuming I don't use the biners for something else during the day, this keeps everything together in one package. Not that it's a huge deal, but I see this as some value added. I guess I could do this with the Crazy Creek buckles if I added the biner too, but I still like the rings better.
Until I find something else to play with, at least... :D
Looks good. I am going to give it a try soon.
I've thought about making a slightly more complicated sack, too - it would have two chambers with a partition in between. The hammock (and whatever) would go in one, and the extra strap/buckle/rings would go in the other. It'd have drawstrings on both ends too.

That would be lighter, but it would take longer to setup...this is just a wrap and a clip, where the would be a wrap and pull the webbing all the way through, then thread it through the buckle. Not a big difference, really...just preference.

I am planning on taking the strap out from the hammock, around the tree, and back towards the hammock. Then through the rings. I haven't tried this, but it seems like it would work and be pretty easy.
