Hey folks, I'm looking into getting something to keep warm for Fall/Winter. I was just looking at a hammock sock from Dream Hammocks. Does anybody have any experience with these? I live in Louisiana, so it doesn't get too ridiculously cold, but I think a hammock sock would help keep the air semi-moist and warm inside. If anybody has any input, it would be greatly appreciated!
I have one, and consider it essential. When the chilly wind blows, it transforms my sleep space.
Not familiar with the sock from Dream Hammocks, but now that I've a sock (DIY) it has become a permanent part of my hammock kit. A sock is a fast, easy, lightweight way to provide protection from the elements. You can still use a tarp, but it's not essential. My sock allows me to downgrade the temp. ratings on my sleeping gear, which means lighter gear.
We used DIY socks with our old set-ups, and getting ready to do TED style or perhaps something else for my new set-up since this hammock is longer. I'm with Oldgringo and feel it is an essential.
I would probably consider using a ripstop with DWR treatment to combat the condensation you may get with a tighter/water resistant material.
Here's just a rough idea of hydrostatic head ratings of various fabrics.
DWR ripstop nylon = 400-450ish
Momentum 90 = 650
Silnylon = 1000 - 1500
This is not exactly measuring apples to apples, but it does give us a general idea of the wind/water blocking ability.
The more breathable material would block less wind/water, but would also cause less condensation in the slightly warmer, humid nights you face.
Would you folks also say that it would still be necessary to at least have an under quilt with the sock? When I first looked at socks, I thought they were an all in one system, but now that I've researched them a bit, it looks like you still need something to keep you warm. Am I correct in assuming this?

Can anyone speak to the differences between the WB sock (not Spindrift) and the Dream Hammock socks?
