So I'm looking at DIYing another hammock and wondering what people find to be the smallest hammock they are comfortable in. I've yet to try anything shorter than 120in or narrower than 60in and I plan on starting big and whipping smaller till I find the sweet spot for myself personally. But I'm curious as to what is the smallest hammock you've found comfortable.
P.S. Including your height, weight, and body type could be helpful to others as well. Entirely optional.
I have a 126x60 and a 120X90 that are both comfortable, although the wider seems to have less to no calf ridge.
I'm 5'8", 205#, round in the middle.
I'm 5'7", ~155#.
I was using a 1.1oz 9'x4' but I'm now in a 9'x4.5' and like it better.
5'9" about 155 to 160 and I have used a 9'x4' as has FireInMyBones. Not my favourite but still very comfortable. I thought I had read that some speer hammock were only a foot longer each side from your height.
I've got that 5'5" fire hydrant shape and I find my shorter HH HL is just fine. But my Survivor has a much longer body, so I can lay much flatter. Also gives more sleeping position/comfort options (like feet-up and stomach sleeping).
I am 5'9" 186# athletic build with a beer gut.....
I have tried a 8' x 4', 8' x 5', 8.5' x 5', 9' x 5', 9' x 64" before, and while they all were not too bad I found there was a pronounced calf ridge in all but the 9' one's that I couldn't get rid of no matter the ridgeline length or hang angle (I had a step ladder, it was funny). I think when using a shorter hammock the hang angle and ridgeline length play a huge factor in the comfort, but width must always be considered as a "just as important" factor as well. Going just two inches wider with certain designs has made a huge difference for me as far as comfort and whether or not there is a prominent calf ridge that is uncomfortable or one that is usable.
Currently my user is 9' x 5' (I think that is the correct width, it may be 58"??????)
It has a modified Knotty mod to it, fabric is 1.5rs, and this is by far the most comfy gathered end hammock I have ever used and is the only one I use now.
I am going to make the same hammock but out of 1.0rs if/when I can get my hands on the type I want....
I find the length of the GT Ultra Light to be just right for my 5' 7" frame, it's 9.5' x 4.5'
Well it seems to me that the magic number is 9ft long by 4.5-5ft width. Thanks guys. This should give me a good starting point for my next hammock.
BIAS will do some very narrow hammocks, the trick is an 11ft length. They have a54" width
