Stealth Urban Camping
Every other weekend one of the HF members ( LarryBourgeois) and I usually head out to some remote wooded area of Crown Land (known in the US as Public Land) for some hammock hanging combined with fishing, hunting, or just good old fashion lollygagging. Some weekends we don’t have the time to travel so we decide to stay within the city for some urban camping. It’s amazing how you can be hanging in parkland not more than 30 feet from a well-used trail with dozens of people passing by and not one soul notices you.
Does anyone else ever hang in their local greenbelts or the wooded areas of city parks?
How about sharing a story or two.
Haven't seen any hammocks in urban camo yet...
I also do some urban Stealth here in Illinois along some bike trails and you are right it is amazing how well hidden you can be even in the open urban areas
I haven't done it, but have considered it after a midnight shift in the summer, just don't know if it would be quiet enough, or if I would be safe enough...
Highly interested in doing this! I have mapped trail-less places and with Google Earth - have discovered ways of hiking in and out. Just a touch of research and parks and locked lands for conservation - pop. I have the UL gear and there is one or two more pieces to hide the location.
I've always liked camping out away from everything, so organized parks are not for me. River banks can provide a lot of possible hanging places out of sight of most people. Most people have a tendency to stay on trails, so if you set-up say 50 feet or more off a trail, chances are you have just disappeared. Little smokeless stoves permit us to have a cup of tea or soup out there, without any sign to passers by that we are there. So much land not being used and kind of going to waste in urban areas that I feel the need to utilize it, with a friendly little hang'n session. :)
Nice thread starter there Woolman. It will be interesting to see other peeps opinions of this style camping.
Sounds right fun to me. In my immediate area there is little public land, but most of the land is privately owned, and a lot of this is leased to hunting clubs, so there is little place to stealth camp without directly trespassing, and I was raised to respect the other man's property lines so I don't go there. I have been pleased to find that by asking I have been given permission to hang in a lot of pretty places, and these are usually quite private and secluded and enjoyable.
Great timing on this post, since just this past week I was exploring a wooded area right downtown in our city. Found a huge ravine with a stream at the bottom and a great naturally cleared spot with trees perfect for hanging. It's city-own property, but is basically un-developable due to the terrain. Therefore I will take it upon myself to make use of this wonderful hidden spot right in the middle of urban chaos!
When I was standing there making plans to come back, I thought how cool it would be to post pics of urban stealth camping where all you can see is nature, even though you're really not in the wilderness . . . I'll post some as soon as I get a chance to go back.
Great, now you got me looking all around my area on google maps for places to hang.
. . .my wife is so not going to like this turn of events.
