For me, I was perusing through an issue of Backpacker magazine while on a long layover in Tokyo and came across an ad for the Clark NA. It had never occurred to me to use a hammock for camping as all of the hammocks I had ever been exposed to were the "fishnet" type that hang in backyards and weigh about 30 pds. I had never liked sleeping on the ground while camping because I never got a true good night's sleep, always woke up extremely sore and it demotivated me to backpack more often knowing that I would not get a good night's sleep and be sore for a week after the trip... not exactly a relaxing/enjoyable way to spend your weekend/free time. I guess I had always assumed it was just part of the "cost of doing business." Plus, being a former semi-pro football player and over 300 pds, I figured there was no way a hammock could support me. I began doing a lot of research on hammocks, stumbled on this forum, had an epiphany.
I got my hammock in early October and spent several nights in it while sleeping OK, but not soundly. I was worried maybe I wasted my money since the "quality" of sleep didn't improve that much (although I wasn't sore). However, I finally got it out onto the trail a couple of weekends ago and after hiking 9 miles and being absolutely exhausted, I crashed early and slept 13 straight hours!! When I woke up, I wasn't sore at all and went bounding off down the trail. So now I know I will never be looking back.
Well hot dang a real life celebrity!! Glad you made it from the unwashed masses of ground dwellers to the land of the enlightened!
All kidding aside ... welcome. Kinda neat to have your first experience with hammocks involving a HF hang and to be documented by non-other than our own Shug!
Not too shabby! ;)
When I met the group I didn't know anyone, not even Shug. :crying
So ya it was an interesting experience. Since then I've had a chance to get to know more of the group and its been incredible. :D
I was looking up Freezerbag cooking and came across Shug in his videoes and that was it for me. Had a HH on the way the next day. Did my first hang last night and am loveing it.:)
Bah, livermush! Scrapple is superior! :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:
