I used to cram my hammock into a stuff sack, my tarp (inside snake skins) into another stuff sack, and my quilt into a stuff sack. Sometime last year, it occurred to me in a "duhh..." moment that...
I commented on the other thread.
This is a well proven design. The hammock is set at just the right tension and TinMan demonstrates the correct offset angle to be able to lie flat. It is nice to see George getting into hammocks!

+1 :-)
Very good deal! I woke up in the middle of the night and knew that I had to order the Element.
Great hike. I also hiked south from the Tye River up the Priest. I set up for an hour or two at the shelter, then moved south to Spy Rock. Next night I walked down fish hatchery road to the Dutch...
We used to call them cocoons and pods. Then they became socks. The modern frowny face sock is my favorite. I am about to make one from M50.
Basement of the Palmerton Jail hostel.... I sat back in my hammock and for the first time ever, sat down in the under quilt instead of the hammock, It flipped me back and I hit the back of my head...
I never thought my cold weather experiments 10 years ago would lead to such amazing equipment and ability to sleep in a cold weather hammock.

This fall, I took a recreational tree climbing lesson. One of the fun, and restful, stops was to lie down in a tree-boat hammock about 30 feet off the ground. There are spots that this can be done...
I'd agree with the maxim that if I am warm, my hands and feet will be warm...
I agree that having a small piece of insulation under my feet helps. I learned that from one of Shug's videos. I put...
I like it.
Walk well!
I had enjoyed Trail Days Thursday and Friday but left before 7AM on Saturday. Tinman of Antigravity Gear said that Fire in My Bones was going to be there Saturday.
I heard nothing of this until I...
I'm going to be walking the section from the 225 crossing just north of Ducannon to Blue Mountain Bed and Breakfast next weekend and next week. Anyone else going to be out on the trail?
I'll then...
I like to wash a hammock more often than I like washing down. That was the problem with my warm hammocks. I like the suspended under quilt better now.
Its fun when folks remember things....
No. The bottom and sides of my sock are filled up with bottom quilt now. I think that the empty bags that I tried back 10 years ago had the problem that they contained air which had convection...
To shorten the ridgeline by 3-4 inches will change the way the hammock feels. At least it has for me. That may not be bad if you are setting up your hammock too taught and having difficulty laying...
In this video, shot in Germantown Reserve on the Twin Creek Trail. During the hike I recorded a method for wrapping a tarp, by weaving the tie-outs. I also talk about cleaning a pot with dirt.

I finished my Momentum 50 underquilt today. The video gives a peek into the way I sew and progressively design equipment during the building. In this video, I start with noseeum baffles that are 4...
I have the zpacks cuban tarp as well. It is half the weight of my silnylon tarp and I appreciate that. I was surprised how fluffy the tarp is. I have gone to carrying it in the netting pocket on...
The bury method works well in sand. It works great in snow, but tie the knot above top of snow to avoid cutting the line when the snow turns into a block of ice.
In general, I would try to get...
A gazebo hang in my front yard. I was experimenting with how short a hang distance I could achieve with my UCR suspension. I found this 10 foot distance, and calculated I could have gone as low as...
I have enjoyed the WB clone I built from 1.1 ripstop. Below 15 F I get a little frost inside. Warmer that 15 F, the top of the sock becomes moist without freezing. If I built a new sock, it will be...
I am have started a journal to keep track of my training and section hikes this year. Some of the ideas I have, that are not very hammock related, I will be posting in the trail journal. I have...
Looks like it was fun again Matt! Nice to see the club out and showing the Texas skies to the kids!
I've read a lot of Certain's journal. It is fun to read. Her style of hiking is so different from mine! Interesting to get inside her head to see that different perspective.
I finished Dutch's journal. It was fun. He did that thru the same year I did my first section hikes. We nearly overlapped and were bothered by the same goat at the shelter just south of Rockfish Gap.
I finished reading his journal and enjoyed it. It was the first southbound account I had read.
Looks like you had a great couple nights to try out the hammock! You did very very well to stay warm at 24F! I enjoyed seeing the place you chose as your first hang spot. As you know, I have hung...
Great videography. Fun looking trail too! Thanks for the video of the hammock set ups.
I thought for moment I had a direct wildlife encounter, but it was my cat jumping up on top of me during a testing night in my yard. He was apparently looking for warmth. No sock, no bugnet,...
Here is a video on the way I use mobile wicks to make a camping candle out of small metal containers.

I've heard deer make the strangest and loudest noises. The first couple snorts I heard in the woods spooked me. I've also heard elk-like calls from both does and bucks when they got alerted as I was...

I don't know of anything in SA proper. Lost Maples has some nice spots. THe Chisos mountains has some great spots at the official campsites on nice hiking trails - and they are relatively cool in the...
Not a ridge runner, but similar.
10'1" this afternoon. By my calculations, I can achieve 8'0" if I need to. The ridge line is about 7'11" in length. This is without the tarp. If I put the tarp...
We may see each other. That is my next section too.
Diane would not let me wear the kilts in public in Texas. I've escaped into the frozen north and she just laughs when I hike in one now.
It was fine for hiking. It is long enough to keep my knees warm. I learned (again) at the Twin Creek Hangout that sleeping in the kilt keeps my feet warmer than sleeping in pants.
Welcome to the madness Matt! You are already getting a ton of useful advice. I've read the book mentioned and it is fun and easy and useful. You have seen an couple of my hammocks and already know...
There used to be about 30 of us in the US 10 years ago with a DIY hammock. Now there are about that many in Ohio. :D
With Mule tape and Bull tape, it seems to work out better to have about a 2 inch close zigzag stitch the length of the overlap. I go back and forth about 5 times with a 5mm width and a 2 mm length...
Slip knot around the stick. Stick stuck in the ground at an angle. Easy Peasy. Just make the slip knot with the standing line (attached to the tarp) in your right hand, so that pulling on that line...
2000, I was looking for a way to only make one portage trip (pack and canoe) in the Boundary Waters. That led me to ultralight hiking and building cedar kayaks (2001-2), which led me to AT hiking...
Wonderful idea! And they come in useful if I lose my spoon.
Best tool I have seen for getting a string through a narrow channel is the plastic needle found in the crocheting section of stores like Jo-Ann's. I used a safety pin for years to thread strings for...
2 miles per hour Is good. Number of hours depends on feet and knees, not on exhaustion. I'd suggest not doing a lot more per day than you are actually doing on weekend days before your hike. I made...
That should work. I walked from the Kincora hostel about 4 hours south of Watuga to the Vandevender Shelter in a day, then stopped at a shelter about 4 hours south of Damascus. I'm pretty sure that I...
