Welcome from Fayetteville. Will be at Yates Place this weekend.
I will be there.
I get up well before first light. If anyone else likes hot coffee in the morning come by my hang - I'll have a giant pot ready.
Looks more and more like I'll make it.
I don't have a fire anywhere near my good gear.
When it calls for some rain and I want a fire I have taken an extra 10x10 Walmart tarp with some 550 cord. I find a place away from my good stuff...
Way to go, glad you enjoyed the weekend.
Smart move with the white cord. Those types of woods all look the same.
I carry a tiny power pack that will give 2 1/2 charges to my iPhone and a spare...
Love the pictures
Different food choices - can bring stuff that would spoil in the NC summer. Plus it's more fun cooking it when you can stay right close to the fire.
Less people.
Better views from the...
Very, very, very nice pictures - and couple.
Congrats.
Garage
For the most part all the camping gear is stored in the garage.
I tied a wood closet rod just under and at the end of my garage door runners/track. Short rod between the two doors. ...
Ditto - I smoke cigars when camping and most times build a fire.
I never smoke next to or in my hammock set up - and my set up is never near the fire - and up wind if I can help it.
The arms...
Looked to be nice woods to camp in.
I'll PM you my e-mail. :)
Thanks for the book link.
I've got a set of the 1:24,000 maps and scan/print the sections I'm going to hike. I also run a "Map My Hike" app on the new sections and draw the route onto the map...
Hello from Fayetteville, a Uwharrie lurker.
Thanks for the info Firebird. I'll probably park at the Moffit TH Friday, 20th Feb, and set up camp a bit up the trail. Have a fun day hike north and back on Saturday.
Before my trip to Birkhead...
Must be part blind. I was staring at the map and did a "What the heck?" I was concentrating on the red marked trail that went out to Lassiter Mill Road. If you click on my first link and pull down...
Might be better used as an under quilt. Gather up the corners with some 550 cord and tie up under the hammock. Others have noted the material will shift - and during the night you will stick to it....
"...Pete, are there any water sources between Little Long Mountain and Thaylor Rd?..."
No - but it's only 1.5 miles from the top of Little Long Mtn to Thaylor road - all down hill. And Poison...
As in my first post - I've only seen the blaze going north from Thaylor Road and it appears you have to hit Lassiter Mill Road for a few miles to make the link up to the southern Birkhead Access...
Going north from Jumping Off Rock Trail Head after you crest the first ridge line you drop down to Poison Creek and walk beside it for about 3/4 mile - going pretty much north. You then turn like...
It's been a year but not much publicized. They've put in the new Moffit Trail Head on Thaylor Road North of the Jumping Off Rock Trail Head.
Coming from Ophir take a left on Thaylor road, at the Y...
New Years Eve I will spend on the top of a Bald Knob - no trees. While I will have all my Hammock gear for the next night - I will spend the 1st night on the Bald Knob on the ground.
I never...
A poncho liner is a wonderful thing to have. I never go to the woods without one.
I go by myself most of the time. Get way back in the woods. See critters but we don't bother each other.
Worst - only scare was a dream. Right at first light, that dream you have that seems so...
Two poncho liners. A little line at the corners of one and you can use it for an UQ.
If you go to the beach you can use one for a beach blanket.
And they dry quick.
(OK, OK, so I love my...
Welcome from Fayetteville
I eat MRE's pretty regular when I'm camping. The packaged meal is pretty bulky and heavy. Before you go - open up the package, strip all the boxes off, sort through getting rid of all the trash,...
I have used this set up so far into the low 20's. Hard to time the weather and weekend together to get lower temps.
It's just a poncho liner tied in three places along the ridge line. The middle...
Sorry for your loss, Sarge. Love the stories of you and Scout the Wonder Dog.
I'm a dog person and have 4 in the house now. I know how you're feeling and you have my sympathy.
JRB Down Top and Bottom here. Also have synthetic bags and poncho liners.
I prefer the down when it's really cold or I need the extra space by squeezing it small. I prefer the synthetic stuff...
I must be the odd one. I usually just wipe my hands on my pants. But I do the best wash after breakfast and supper. Few ounces of warm water and my bandana followed by a baby wipe. I try and keep...
Thumbs up on the report and pictures.
Enjoy your time together - memories last a lifetime.
Then the trip becomes an adventure. Some of my best memories of trips into the woods is when things went a little sideways from what was planned or expected.
I've got some high end gear - and low...
You guys don't forget about Uwharrie NF. Pretty much the middle of the State - and not too far from anywhere. Plenty of off trail areas you can get "lost" in for the weekend.
Good trip report.
I do like the Wood Run campsite - and getting just outside sight of the parking lot.
You were maybe 50 feet from my site. I recognized the two downed trees. Couple of more...
Dang - you got the lure out.
I liked the loop the last time I did it.
The Trail is a lot different that the Southern Uwharrie Trail (They are working on the connection as we type).
The...
If you're coming through Troy on 24/27 the Ranger station is just on the East side of town.
Coming out of Bisco it's 4 lanes. When it goes back to two lanes you go down a hill and up a hill. The...
Got a chuckle - good video.
About 100 yards Northwest of the outhouse - just off to the left of the top of the low ridge. Fire Pit and some left over wood on a rock. One good all nighter chunk.
And the gate is open so you...
I'm lazy and didn't change my bookmarks for J or B.
A year (?) or so ago I got a J or B error 404 page and clicked on shop J or B and it went right to the sight.
Since then I click, get the...
Had a great time New Years Eve.
Nice fire, lots of wood around.
Didn't get that cold but I used something new the last couple of times I went out. I hate to get the head end of my top quilt...
NC - Uwharrie - 31st - New Years Eve.
Going up to Uwharrie for New Years Eve. Hope to get to Wood Run Camp around 2ish. 1 1/2 miles or so up the gravel road from the 24/27 Trail Head.
Plan to...
If you do the 50 point Star you'll see my handle on a bunch of them.
Hammock camping is using pretty much durable goods - as long as freaks of nature don't blow your camp apart or a tree fall on something.
Before I got in to hammock camping I slept out under the...
My Snake.
Uwharrie Trail 09/2012.
No zoom and I wasn't getting any closer.
Sometimes when I'm out alone and the woods are real quiet just before I go to bed I'll cut loose with a big howl.
Never have gotten an answer from the Uwharrie Beast,
I just use my light fleece like jacket. Make it as thick or thin as I need it at the moment. Just put it on when I get out of the Hammock in cool weather.
Poncho Liner or something similar. Don't put it under you.
Slip it between the UQ and Hammock. Gather up an end corner with some line, run the line through a hook on a bungee cord (works like...
Yeah, but when ever they say "Remember when...." you're the odd man out because you weren't there.
Sometimes the best memories are of the worst of times.
Way to hang in there guys. And did I...
Great first hang, report and pictures - liked the bear.
The more you do it the better it gets.
