I know this has been somewhat ressurrected, but it is the first time I have seen it, and it looks like a great alternative for someone like me, trying to collect some gear on the cheap to get...
Great solution. My answer to that much snow is to stay home :D
I picked up some of the greener fabric today @ the Franklin Wal*Mart. They were about out of the 66" width stuff, and didn't have any of the browner color (I really wanted to do a 2 tone). They told...
I had no idea that the Franklin WM still carried fabric. I work up that way, I'll have to stop in and see. Thanks for the tip. I was going to hit the Joanne's up there anyway, but this gives me...
Glad to hear it kept you warm! Thanks for the update.
Do they make it in a 10X10, or is 12X12 as small as it gets? I have 0 luck searching on that site :D
Thanks!
12X12 on a diagonal is something like 16 feet, which is a little longer than I want.
Wow, nice! Congrats. Hopefully mine will turn out half as well as yours!
+1 for fall. Just too darn hot right now! I'm in the middle of the state near the Meriwether Lewis National Monument, and I have been eyeballing Sipsey as well (went there a few times as a kid).
Thanks Scott!
Glad I could help out man. That's part of why I did it. I am totally new to this too and wanted to make sure I didn't mss anything.
Wow, very nice!
Sounds good. Post some pics when you get it done.
Teach em to make their own, that way they won't always be wanting to eat your fish, they can catch their own! :D
Thanks Ron, that helped explain it.
What about making a small 'cup' of fabric with line attached to it that you could pull on to help get it into the bag. Run the lines back through the bag with the fabric cup at the far end of you...
Thanks for the tip. I was going to get some leader line but that looks like it would work pretty well too.
Ugh. More math.
12' hammock = 144"
Average sag is 83%
(144 X 83) / 100 = 119.52
119.52 / 12 = 9.96 or 10'
Its too late at night to be doing math, but it is what it is :D
I'll be pitching on the diagonal, so...
Pythagorus says:
A^2 + B^2 = C^2 (sorry, no square key on my iPhone)
SO, (10)(10) +...
Just hit the weather, wish I hadn't!

20:00, 89*, feels like 96*!!!
Man I don't know how you are able to sleep outside in this heat haha. The weather channel said it felt like 90 at 10 pm the other night while I was at work
I think I'm going to end up with a...
I am not proficient with the sewing stuff either (though I am secure enough to refer to it as sewing :D ), but I am lucky in that my wife works at a school that still teaches home economics, so I'll...
Hey man,
I think it depends on if you are wanting to do any sewing yourself or not as to if it comes with loops. I know some people buy the tie down straps that you can get at wally world (like...
Some of that stuff is exothermic (not sure about GG), and I am pretty sure that GG expands as well, 2 things to keep in mind. I doubt it gets hot enough to really damage the cuben, but if it causes...
That's always a nice thing, huh? Congrats and good job!
JJ (I hope you don't mind me referring to you like that), that is a pretty good idea. Mismatched gear isn't the end of the world but I may as well make it look good if I'm going to go through the...
Ahhh, ok. I had figured on a 2:1 ratio, so I was planning for 12' raw material per whoopie (I wasn't clear with the way I wrote it, but the math adds up :D ). It's not critical to me that it comes...
This is my list so far for the hammock, but I am still a week or two (at least!) away from being serious about making any purchases. The wife and I just spent a bunch of cash on the house and I've...
Ahhh, now that makes sense JJ. Thanks!
I actually sent myself an email with links to where I am planning to buy. So many forums these days frown on that sort of thing, that I wasn't sure about...
BTW, I figured I'd use amsteel for so much of it because it doesn't make sense to order different products from different places when I can just make 1 order from 1 place and have all my needs met....
Hey Tom,
From what I remember, if you make your own whoopie slings (I plan to) you need double the amount of amsteel (like you said). So for 6' of whoopie you need 12' of amsteel.
I've...
Hmm... going points. Most of my camping growing up was under a tarp and in MS, so cold is relative. Being in a hammock really changes it. It sounds like when it comes time to make a quilt, I'd best...
I had planned to use shock cord between the tie outs and the cord (like the STL that are stickied at the top of the DIY forum), so that if the shock cord wore out or somehow snapped, it would be...
I am having a hard time understanding how you attached the structural ridge line. It is tough for me to see in the picture due to it being white on white (the line).
You have an end channel,...
Good tip, thank you sir!
Folks, you have no idea just how much help this thread has been, TYVM! It cleared up a bunch of things for me. Having it in one answer like this was great. Again, thank you!
I am sure there are a blue million of these in this forum already, but I wanted to make my own list so that I could 1) get your help making sure I don't miss anything and 2) have a complete list so I...
Alright, hopefully I can translate my thoughts into words clearly here...
Say a TQ has a given temp rating of 40*. That means that it would potentially keep you comfy to 40*.
Now, is that...
Thanks for the info guys, the last thing I want is to wake up on the ground in the AM :D
Thanks for your service. I've got some family out in East TN that is with the 278th.
Thanks for the info SGT. You with the 278th?
Ok, so are we talking double 1.9 or single? Thanks so much for the help. I can read all I want but sometimes I just have to have it spelled out
Haha, I suppose that is correct too :D
Thanks
Haha, ok. Nothing like lugging bricks through the woods :D
So, at my weight I am probably looking at a double layer of typical hammock material, right? Double layer of 1.1, etc.
I was afraid of that... file that one in the too good to be true folder. Thanks for the link, back to researching :D
I have found some listings on 'the big auction site' (I'm not sure if links to the bay are allowed or not, please let me know and I'll just link it if they are) that have made me curious.
There...
Thank you sir :D
It looks like this kind would be the easiest to make, and would help alleviate the problem of mosquitoes biting through the bottom of the hammock if no UQ is used. Am I correct to think this way?
Sorry for my new guy question, but well, I am a new guy :D
IX is the insulation, correct? What does IX stand for, and where do you get it? Thanks!
Do you put any kind of a point on these? I can't imagine that the diameter is small enough to work any knots loose. Do you mind sharing pictures of your finished product? Thanks!
Edited to add:...
Thanks SF, I just wish that they allowed camping near those falls. Too many places around here are for day use only. I've called the state and asked, but no one will give permission to camp or...
