I just had mine out this weekend and was plenty warm at 38 degrees. I was using a winter incubator underquilt but my back got chilly a few times due to an airgap that I was too lazy to get out and...
Taking mine to the superior hiking trail next week. Lows in the low 40's. Hopefully this and my winter incubator will keep me warm enough with a down sweater and long underwear.
I'm taking mine out tomorrow for and overnighter to yellow river state forest. Supposed to get down to 42 and foggy. It will help me decide on what my warmer quilt will be. 3 season or winter...
I suggest trying it as is first.(after splitting the back that is. I think its plenty wide for hammmocking.
I think you would be better served getting a bag without a sewn footbox as a starter for an underquilt. These make good top quilts, but at 40 inches wide, it would be pretty narrow for an underquilt...
Here's why its so hard to find a rating on these bags.
From RAB's website:
As this is technically only 'half' of a sleeping bag it is not possible to test it using EN13537 testing procedure -...
The rating is 32-55 degrees, whatever that means, according to Amazon that was also selling this bag. Its 7.1oz of 850 fill power down so I would say its good down to 40 or lower. It should have the...
I don't think it is needed. Any additional width would be wasted down on me, most likely compacted under me.
No, I sewed a 1/2 inch hem on each side of the slip, then bartacked the seams together for strength. I just spent a few days on the superior hiking trail and this top quilt worked perfectly. Temps...
If you have a scissors and a lighter you can do it. Cut a slit down the back. Heat seal the raw edges, maybe put a couple re-enforcement stitches at the end of the split and your done.
OK here are some pics. Its on a full size bed for scale.

40 inches across the top laid out flat on the floor. That's just the down filled part.
I opened up the back on mine, sewed a 1/2 inch hem on either side of the split. Then pinched the 2 hems together and put a bartack at the end to keep the split from spreading. Works great as a top...
got mine today and its very nice. Very very light. pretty good loft for only 7oz of fill. Definitely slitting the back open. I am really quite impressed. This will be an excellent top quilt. 17.7...
I ordered one of these as well. I won't get mine til next Thursday though :( Post a pic after you convert it to a quilt.
