The problem with compressing is that it loses insulating ability if you don't get it really fluffed back up before sleeping in it. It can take hours to recover from being smashed.
I try to keep my...
My friend and I were at a music festival and we were getting into our hammocks pretty late at night. I was still awake and listening to all of the goings on when I saw some drunk walking past our...
I carry a small roll of thin closed cell rubber foam. in camp, I use it to sit on and make rocks and logs warmer, and when at the hammock, I use it for a mat to stand on when getting dressed. It...
You may not be able to afford a TQ, but I would find a light sleeping left unzipped bag to use for a top.
For the short term, there are two hostels in Damascus
I use a lot of hand warmers when it's really cold. Put a couple of the large adhesive pad warmers onto the underquilt between the UQ and hammock bottom. the warmers do a great deal of the work...
The Mount Rogers Hang is this Weekend right in the middle of it.
Y'all keep an eye out on the weather for Thomas Knob. It can get sporty up there.
You should definitely come up to the winter hang at Mt Rogers Next wekend. We'll be hiking and cold weather hanging.
I use a lot of handwarmers. They really will keep you toasty
Me and Jimbo are coming. I assume he'll make Jumbalaya for Sat. Night. again. I have an order in to Santa for some snowshoes, but not sure. If anyone has a pair I can use, I'd appreciate it. I'd...
If anyone has any extra snow shoes..
I'd love to try them out!
Thanks!
Going ahead and marking this date on my calendar. Hope it sticks. Missed the last two years. Really looking forward to it.
If I have tension on a line around a tree that looks like the bark may be thin and sensitive like poplar, beech, birch or aspen, I will break a few little twigs and put them in between the bark and...
I log about 18 trips a year
I got into hammocks about 7 years ago when I kept hearing about "The Dark Side" on Whiteblaze. Our scout troop were about to go on a lightweight backpacking trip and...
I use tree huggers connected to whoopies with a loop to loop connection. Never had a problem with sap. One thing good about it is the huggers I have are short and if they don't go all the way around...
I never use one, but around these parts, bugs aren't really a problem.
They would probably sell a lot more bugnets if they called them spidernets
No need to wash it again. Just try it. Make sure you don't shrink your sweater, no heat if possible.
The wool creates a lot of static that makes all of the barbs stand out. The same way that a lot of static will make your hair stand straight up. It really helps a lot to fluff up down after washing
I would wash it and try to revive the down first.
Follow good instructions for hand washing and then drying down, and then after that, put it in a dryer with lowest or no heat and an old ragg wool...
Rotation, rotation rotation
On my Eno's, I felt a "spine" in the fabric, where there seemed to be more tension down the middle of the hammock. I removed the the big black rope and huge knot from the gathers on the ends and...
I use a small piece of thin closed cell foam I got at a Mt Rogers hang a few years ago. I use it just to stand on if I need it and carry it to the campfire to sit on. Dual purpose. It rolls right up...
Just dig to ground, put in your stake in the ground as if there were no snow and then stomp snow on top of that.
it's not a measure of how much moisture is in the air. It indicates the temperature at which water vapor in the air will condense into droplets.
on a graph it is where the lines of temperature,...
we have had kids stacked up three high. They love it
we were camping at a campground with some other couples when we were young and no kids. Kind of a primitive spot, but there were some other sites nearby. We had been up partying a while when an old...
The less I wear, the warmer my bag feels.
I have my hammock packed with the underquilt, hammock, UQP , and TQ all put together. These are rolled and stuffed so that both carabiners are sticking up out of the top of the pack. I keep my tarp...
Good way to decompress down is with static. Put down product in the dryer with an old ragg wool sweater on no heat for a while. You know how your hair stands up to static? So will all the little...
I think it would be better to point the girl here to get some good help from people who know hammocks and insulation than to point and laugh at her.
Thanks
I went to their(WL) website and only found the 2" baffle 10˚ model.
I'm sure anyone would make a great one to order...
Let me break out my metric converter and pounds to dollars exchange and take a look! :)
Looks about right, though. Thanks
Does anybody still make a full size big baffle, non shaped, 0˚ underquilt like the old stormcrow original model?
Never said down heats itself. That's ridiculous. Perhaps I should shorten my responses.
This is what happens when you argue with engineers. The theory doesn't always match the observations. If not, then planes would never crash, bridges would never fall, and lawyers would be out of...
When I put on a down jacket that is cold, It is cold at first, but then it warms up and I am toasty.
If I could, I would wear a full down suit au natural underneath.
If you're underquilt is too...
Exactly. I feel like my whole system transports vapor pretty well and keeps me warm. It's a system that's been tested in multiple days of subzero with no appreciable condensation. I couldn't sleep...
Totally disagree with this. Warm air filled down will keep you warmer than cold air filled down.
Don't insulate yourself from your insulation. That includes sleeping in heavy clothes.
You can...
The beauty of the full length UQ, to me, was that no matter where I flopped around I was still warm. Before when I was on pads, there was always an unconscious awareness of where I needed to be in...
I would add some chemical handwarmers.
just try one time not zipping it up
If you are packing something for "Just in Case", don't.
never compress your down while storing. When you get to your destination, let your down have time to decompress.
I get them going about an hour before I turn in.
Also, this weekend at the Grayson Highlands hang(2.2 degrees!) , in the morning I took the handwarmers and put them in my boots a while before I...
I thought they contained everything but the oxygen needed to oxidize the iron.
Thanks, will be trying that tomorrow night. My sleeping bag has a little loop at the bottom of the footbox. Now I know what it's for!
Marci, You're awesome.
Nice, I've used that one before.
You're sag looks a little tight and high for my taste. I would loosen that up a bit or your shoulders are going to get squeezed. I like to have my butt at chair...
Maybe a lot has to do with the fabric and construction of the underquilt. My Stormcrow(HG) incubator has never felt damp other than in severe up-rain. I think it breathes and transports moisture...
