I may spring the cash on the 10' 1" 7/8 dowel rod I saw at lowes, I think they run about 14 bucks. I am sure it was strong enough but I am not sure if 10" would be long enough

I think I'm going to go with the 2 x 2 stuff being it is so inexpensive. I am sure strength wont be an issue and it should lash together just fine. The pressure treated stuff costs about $2.50 an 8'...
