You got it. Some folks have had success guying out their tripods to the ground or to a tree or rock. That would avoid the ridge pole. But the guy lines and anchors have to be REALLY STRONG!...

Sorry K0m4. The purpose of the ridge pole is to prevent the tripods from tipping INWARD. The hammock pulls the tops of the tripods together. A rope would not work in this case.
I hope you can...
YoYO: I use my TL stand every evening in the living room. It's been a fixture since last summer and hasn't failed yet. Mine's of tulip poplar saplings. Instead of spread-limiting lines, I used...

Lbagley: Sorry to hear about your bank troubles! :(
Took me a second to figure out 3/4 emt is probably 3/4" electrical mule tape. Quite a few folks here use mule tape for their suspension...
My living room TL stand's legs are turned toward the hammock but at a slight angle away from the center line. I don't know exactly how much this reduces the inward pull, but it works well for us and...
Lonetracker: I've made three TL stands, all out of tulip poplar saplings, for a natural look (except for the first one that uses a TV antenna mast for a ridgepole). I'm afraid your ridgepole is just...
Ah, yes. Metal and lightning: :scared: You could make a TL stand out of all wood like QChan (all bamboo) and Gmctter (all saplings) (see pages 5 and 6, this thread)
I made my first stand from...
Badchef: No. The tripods take the weight straight down to the ground, dividing it up into six equal parts. Therefore, having the top of the tripod directly centered among the three legs gives it...
I strongly urge anyone making a TL stand with PVC to be certain to get SCHEDULE 80 PVC pipes. It has thicker walls than Schedule 40. 33210 Enjoy!!!!
I'm no engineer, but I believe you want the weight to transfer straight down from the tops of the tripods, THROUGH the ridge pole, down to the ground (the tripods' feet). In fact, my ridgepole would...
I look forward to that! :)
Major buzz-kill!!! :cursing:
Thanks for the investigative reports, Flashbang009 and Hppyfngy! I guess I'll stick with my debarked tulip poplar saplings. Not very portable, but that's okay. ...
FB009: Are you SURE you got the 1.75" inch ones? The 3/4" ones come in a 4-pack. Just askin' :) Are they RED or BROWN?!? THANKS for shopping and posting your review!
Back on page 32:
1.75" is WAAAAAAYY bigger than PDA uses and PDA reports a weight of 160+
I don't think there is much difference between "structural" bamboo and "decorative" bamboo--it's in...
Oh yeah! I see them! 1.75" bamboo poles They did not come up when I searched "bamboo" but they come up when I searched "poles"! These will be GREAT for making a TL stand. And they come in sets...
You might still get a hold of these: bamboo poles
They seem pretty small, but other, more knowledgeable folks here have said they should be plenty strong. Good luck, Peanuts!
Re: Walking closed
I have seen this phenomenon on several occasions. If a tripod TIPS toward the center of the hammock, one leg is lifted off the ground and collapses to the center (followed...
The idea of fabric-braced tripods is intriguing for sure. I do worry, however, that there would be no resistance to the tripod legs "walking" CLOSED. I found that to be the most common--in fact,...
Yep. It's called a Bushcraft chair: 27116 Here's one from our own HF Gallery: 27113
Glad you're diggin' your TL stand! :D
Really?!?!? That's GREAT to hear! Thanks for posting!
Saw these at Pier One Imports today:

L:boggle:VE THAT!
Now I see. Say! That is C:boggle::boggle:L!!!
I have that issue too. (and I use bark covered saplings) I understand your feeling of "cheating" but putting screws under the lashing is actually a very good idea! I use cord that's not very...
Looks g:boggle::boggle:d, QChan! (and grandpa!) I was thinking about the same thing. The tripods not only want to spread out, they also have an annoying (and painful!) habit of folding up ...

I like your new aluminum model, TurtleLady!!! :boggle: I've been thinking of all kinds of materials: rake handles, galvanized pipe, PVC, dowels.... . I think dowels win in the "economy" category,...
Cool, Bchboy! Keep us posted!
Ditto on that! That was a great buy, PDA. Checking prices of bamboo on line, I see it's pretty pricey. You got a super deal there! Can't wait for some pix!!
