FWIW, I ordered a several HG quilts a few weeks ago, and they do have a smell to them, while my older HG quilts do not (and never did). Have considered washing them, but have taken a "wait and see"...
Thanks -- will definitely stop by there. Anyone else have any ideas?
Howdy Folks,
I'm looking for suggestions.... I have a work-related trip to Aspen, Co the first week of June, and I have convinced my wife to join me for a couple of days hiking and hanging after...
Reminds me of a post i made a long time ago here.
Nothing like an alligator pinata.
KP,
Thanks for the info. I was a bit concerned about the creek crossings without 4wd, but sounds like it shouldn't be a problem!
Is anyone familiar with Sandy Ford Rd near the Chattooga River? I'm planning a hike along the Chattooga, and would like to leave my car there for four days. Just wondering if the area is safe, if...
I'll bet there is a treasure map to a chest of gold on a deserted island rolled up inside one of the spreader bars -- probably forgot to get it out when he sold it..
I use it as a ridge line and as tie-outs. Holds knots well, and I've had no problems with tangling as long as you are careful with it. Gotta use the braided stuff.
I have used braided mason line for tie-outs on a tarp, even had them configured as whoopie slings. No problems at all. Worked well. In fact, the whoopies seemed to work very well with the mason...
When I take my twins (7 yrs old now), I have them in separate hammocks, either one above the other, or one right next to the other using three trees. The problem comes when the third child also...
I once let my neighbor use one of my hammocks. He returned it a few days later with this photo:

I'd love to see tapatalk as an option too. I use it all the time on another forum i frequent....
Gents,
Thanks for the quick responses and valuable info. One more quick question for all you gorge rats out there. Is Memorial Highway passable in a 2wd passenger car, or do you need 4wd?
Sounds like a great trip!
Did anyone go down Cambric? Just wondering how bad it is and if the river is crossable near there....
Kind of like the old adage, "Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an ax." My brother said that's how they build fences for the forest service.
Cool innovations Grizz. What's the idea behind the diamond knot instead of just attaching the suspension permanently? Do you have many hammocks, and one set of suspension that you use for all of...
I took my four kids and wife backpacking two weeks ago. Girls (ages 6,6,3) each in their own hammocks, wife and I each in our own hammocks and son (6 months) in the tent. Girls wouldn't even try the...
I hiked the foothills trail for a week last year with a 5X10 sil tarp over a narrow footed bridge, and didn't get wet at all. Required some creative pitching, but worked well.
I used a 10x5 tarp for 5 days on the foothills trail in August, and through some pretty severe thunderstorms I stayed completely dry. It required some innovative site selection, but will work if you...
I have done it with grip clips. I put grip clips on the top side, about two inches from the edge, and used those to hang the quilt instead of the tie-outs in the corner. It seemed to work, but I...
The frog was large, and some of the boys thought it would make a nice dinner, but we convinced them to let it go. The same fate didn't fall to the large black snake the next day, probably because no...
I hiked the foothills trail with a group of 16-18 year old scouts a few weeks ago. I have tons of video and still footage to make a "Grizz-styled documentary", but below is the short version to be...
I suppose if I have a neat sheet for an underquilt this time of year, that would keep the rain off from underneath if the wind was blowing in addition to the 10 degrees or so of insulation value. ...
I want to use a 5' x 9' tarp on a DIY bridge that has an 18" foot spread and a 36" head spread. Has anyone used a narrow tarp for such a setup? If so, did it seem to work ok? It would be less than...
Did his name happen to be Al Gore?
Thanks for you input. I agree -- its probably too heavy/too small for what I want.
I saw this tarp online. Has anyone used it before for a hammock? I want it to use for a loaner hammock i let friends use.
I had sypderline break. You can see in this thread.
I grew up in Utah about 30 minutes north of Salina, which is right on I-70 (only had one mom ;)). If you get of I-70 in Salina, head north on highway89 about 15-20 minutes, you can hit some...
That's pretty light. Maybe I'll have to give it a try.
Interesting. Thanks for the info. Maybe this idea isn't as promising as I thought . . . .
Another bronze rule: Sometimes it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission . . . .
Make sure to post results when you do it. I have been tempted to pick some up at Home Depot, but haven't had the chance to do it yet. I think it will work . . . .
I'd be game for 4-6h
Interesting replies. Thanks to all. I wonder if you could get some of this stuff at Uhaul or the UPS store? I'll check on my way home from work today . . . .
Has anyone tried "microfoam" sandwiched between say a neat sheet and a layer of sil as an underquilt?
I wish I could be there. I'll be talking taxes in DC that weekend. Doesn't get more exciting than that . . . .
I have to say that Linville is one of the coolest places I've been. I really want to go back. Maybe later this year.
And the tarp -- well, i don't mind making another one just for an experiment....
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going to buy some sil from Speer Hammocks, make another tarp, and hope for a downpour. Then I can compare. I'll also know if there is a difference in the way they...
Sure did. It was pretty clear that it wasn't coming from the seam. It almost looked like a spot or two in random locations that either were allowing water through, or condensation was building up....
I use it all the time. I almost exclusively use a tautline hitch. It doesn't slip at all.
Could be DWR. But it looks and feels just like my JRB 10x11 Sil tarp. I'll try the overnight cup test. I've done it for a few minutes, but never overnight.
On Friday and Saturday last week I took a group of Scouts to Linville Gorge. We parked in the Table Rock Picnic Area parking lot, arriving at around 2:00 in the afternoon on Friday. From there we...
Dang, That is AWESOME. Looks like I'll have another project to work on soon . . . .
Hangnout,
That is a really cool setup. I am amazed it holds. Does it ever slip?
Chuck,
Thanks. That's interesting. I certainly violated the recommendations for running the rope around a certain diameter object. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had similar...
One more thing -- given that the line didn't break, just the sheathing, I wonder if the 3.8mm would have made a difference?
It is a garda hitch.
2.8mm spyderline. For some reason I thought others were using a garda . . . . What is the latest and greatest?
I think it occurred at the rings, but it was hard to...
I seem to recall that some use spyder line in a ring-buckle system. At least, I'm pretty sure I got the idea off this site, and didn't invent it. Anyway, I was laying in my hammock when *snap* i...
