hey there, shug! man, i must've sent dozens of campers to your channel over this last year. my tolerance for questions would become strained and i just started referring to "shug" as a default.

hello slug! dewey's doing just fine:)
how's things in alabama?
yep, that was i, man. thanks much for the bag tour. i'd never tried one before:)
i was explaining my osprey exos 38 experiment over the summer. i tried a bit "fancier" bag since my gear weight was...
man, that looks great!
your last two items brought a grin:) much appreciated!:)
thank you:) at some point i will. i must say, however, that i'm not ideally suited for groups as an organizer. leading is fine, but the efforts up front are more than i bargained for. i'm not as...
blame the russians? :D
161615i went for an overnighter last weekend after about a 6 month break. work and backpacking burn-out contributed to the respite.
what've i missed?

I wasn't going to publish this and certainly didn't edit it....
i only use stuff sacks IF it benefits me volume-wise. i use smaller capacity packs, and sometimes a sack makes sense; most of the time, it doesn't.
october temps are averaging 72-48. rain isn't usually huge in october. if it's dramatic, it'd be due to hurricane blowback. there won't be snow or freezing temps. colors do begin to change in october...
you're spot on, man. most reviews i see are from really good hikers but the mileage is regurgitated, i suspect. they all say the same thing; 25 apx miles [i forget the exact quote]. the gpx files...
hey there, slug. temps were good for june. friday was hot and humid; around 91, and overnight a low of about 68. i used a uqp under the hammock friday night; no uq.
saturday was cloudy, cooler and...

a way to a lighter hammock/tarp setup.
cuben fiber tarp
1.0 weight gathered end hammock. [depends on your body mass].
straps and Ti-buckles/whoopies [whichever].
this is about as light as...
full length.
20*
haven't read all the replies.
for summer [arkansas] i use the WL stuff, top and bottom. i picked up both uq's; full and partial. i've taken them to 40* several times [down pants to supplement]....
wasn't there an old joke about a piccolo player...........
man, that takes me back a bit. i remember finding jeff's site by accident around 2007 maybe? i can't recall. i'd drift in and out, kinda like here.

babypowder. it's the miracle drug. keep socks and bed clothes in a bag saturated with it. take some to toss in the hammock and extra dust the feet.
that hit my FB page today. there seems to be a rash of folks getting into the quilt game. i've had no less than 3 hit me in the last few weeks.
this one looks like a lot of quilt. i'm skeptical of...
i have about 6 dutch 11 footers. all single layer. various weights and fabrics.
all of them are great hammocks.
sv-
if you're a backpacker..........
i'd recommend an 11 foot single layer model. 1.4 to 1.6 fabric. i always recommend Dutch and will do so here........

i don't use a ridge orgainzer anymore. always filled it full of crap.

alltrails has a good gpx upload.

i'd suggest an out/back from barkshed to gunner pool.
like the BRT these are carved canyon areas, BUT, sylamore offers a closer creek hike, but you're rarely ON the creek. however, IF you need...
never had to do it.
i have carried a ground cover and mat for when there's been no hanging allowed and i was FORCED to be there. i just add it to a regular hammock-packed bag.
but i've never,...

here's my FB page. if you scroll back to last weekend, march 11th, you can see some vids of a BRT trip. not the best views, as we were sortof officially...
another alternative; hurricane creek. plenty of water.

any of these three are good. hurricane offers more straight on water...
i can get you more detailed gps/gpx info when you narrow it down.
got to thinking, and was discussing with a friend; most of the BRT is elevation above the river with little to no water action. he recommends some nearby action on the OHT; hobo falls/ceder creek...

lemme think on it. just did an explaratory up there weekend before last. you can't go where i went unless you want punishment, BEAR CREEK is impassable.

fixed. it's that simple.
cheers........sv
i needed a few of these for summer, group hikes, etc.
i tested it this evening. temps were around 40* with 75% humidity.
was wearing plenty on top, but only thin hiking pants.
the UQ works...
shug has great videos on the subject.
tarps really aren't all that hard. the biggest fiddling relates to your tie-out material and method.
i use cuben all the time. i'm in the rain alot this...
i only spent one night in mine, and the temp was about 25*. a couple of things........
1. used an exped 5 or 7, can't recall which one i have. temp comfort from below was fine.
2. needed much...
i've been to the singles in my zero gear. it was fine. i've never been to the wild north where those guys roam.
the coldest days for me aren't due to extreme temps; it's the saturated air...
i'll show this to dewey.
i have a dog
fwiw; most of the time when i'm thinking i'm being nailed by mosquitos, it's actually no-seeums. i can tell by the damage left behind [a cluster of swelling that i don't get with mosquitos].
