I haven't tried it personally, but I don't see why it would be a problem. Adding joints does create more weak points. So, you just need to make sure you have the pieces screwed in far enough.

I'm not sure about the pvc, but take a look at the stand that TATO just came out with. I like my pipe stand, but I think third will be easier to move around.
Glad you weren't hurt. I can't imagine how shaky 1/2" is. 1" is wobbly enough for me.
