I leave them at home. To me they are much more fiddly than threading my suspension strap through the loop.
A becket hitch using webbing, mule tape or even amsteel, is lighter, cheaper and easier to use than any of the shiny hardware options available.
I've done the very same set up but found no need for any titanium hooks or a specific spreader bar.. I just inserted a hiking pole into the continuous loops on the head end of our two hammocks. It...
Over the years I've been hammock camping I've found, to my cost, that the knick knacks that generate so much hysteria on this forum have often proved a disappointment once they've made the expensive,...
Nice work.
Have you seen Tendertoe's ultralight hiker pole mod?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgZCZ-_iR0Q
But don't you have to thread the cinch buckles each time?
You are welcome. I love the simple solutions. Especially when it means that you don't need to buy or carry extra gear. :)
So Tumbleweed, now you see why I was looking for some Muletape. :)
Turns out my version of this set up, using 2x14ft 1inch straps is lighter than my amsteel whoopies with whoopie hooks and tree straps with Dutch clips. It's also considerably easier to use, can be...
You are welcome. I can't take credit for the idea but it's a great pleasure to share it.
You could try a large pad like this one which is wide enough for hammock use and will mould around your body shape.
Tarp. Without doubt.
I use long webbing straps tied with a slippery sheet bend to the continous loops on my hammock. I has all the flexibilty and ease of use and because there's no hardware it's still one of the lightest...
But no hardware is needed if you have loops. I find tieing a slippery sheet bend even easier than speed hooks. (which I understand use the same idea as Hammock Anchors)
I've got TQ and UQ from http://ukhammocks.co.uk. Both are excellent.
I can't vouch for the quality of anything from DD.
I might be wrong but I think this is quite different from a tarp hook.
If the wind was high I'd just put a slippery half hitch on it.
I think these might be lighter than titanium. They are definitely cheaper.
You can use the Muletape with tree straps. Personally I run webbing all the way to amsteel continuous loops at the hammock ends for a cheap, reliable, hardware free suspension that can be adjusted...
A suspension set up like this including tree straps is lighter, cheaper and easier to use than any whoopie set up. But don't buy it. People throw this stuff away. You can get it for free.

Yes sorry I made an error calculating the OPs hammock weight. Should have read 617g.
I find webbing to amsteel is totally secure but whatever you choose be sure to test it before you rely on it.
I believe so. I think the only thing to avoid is amsteel to amsteel or dyneema to dyneema. They are too slippery.
+1
I use it with webbing and amsteel loops. It is the best suspension system I've ever used and actually lighter and cheaper and more reliable and more adjustable.....
I see your hammock weighs 21.75oz. That converts to 786.70g.
My DIY hammock weighs less than 350g including suspension and together they cost less than £15 (that's 22.8811 of your funny money) :)

If you have continuous loops this method allows you to go as short as you like. No hardware needed.

I've been using this method to tie up my tarp since I read the original post. It is excellent. By far the best I've used to date. Better than the other hardware I've tried.
It's cheaper, lighter,...
The simple knot end is great way to make a hammock. Very secure and no sewing required. (I don't bother hemming the fabric either). Just be sure to use a longer piece as the knot reduces the length...
I can totally see it working with a kid on top but not so practical with two adults.
Love your idea with 3 trees, two tarps with porch mode facing each other. Must give that a try.
I'm also planning to use Tendertoe's amazing pole mod idea to open up the tarp at the head end.
So would you do it that way if you didn't have to? I'm planning a week long trip with my wife and it will be her first time sleeping in a hammock so I'm looking for a practical method that she will...
Is that a practical way to do it? The idea makes me a little nervous.
I just tried out this method using just one hiking pole at the head end of the two hammocks. It was a great success and surprising how short you can go with the pole.
I only extended the fatter...
It is such a great idea. It would be a shame if ideas like this got swamped beneath the what-to-buy-next posts.
Thanks to Tendertoe's genius idea, originally posted in 2012, I've just completed my sub 10 gram, pole mod using some masons line and my hiking poles.
Personally I would never have considered a...
Why is it tapered? Doesn't that mean you can only ever draw back one end?
Are you on commission?
I've got 2 projects brewing. A winter sock and a detachable bug net.
I want to put some mesh into my winter sock to prevent condensation but, as I'm planning it, it's beginning to resemble a bug...
If I were in your position I would not trust the Atlas straps even if ENO replaced them. Why not just buy some polyester webbing and tie a loop in one end like this:

Great. Thanks for your reply.
That's just what I was thinking of doing but I was surprised not to find it discussed here already.
I'll save it
I looked at the detail in the link. This so called 'Irish Wilderness' isn't even in Ireland!!!
Hi O&B
We're heading to Sweden for this trip. There are trees aplenty. Not too many really fat ones but with so many to choose from we should find something suitable.
The area looks like this....
Thanks Fronkey. It's great to see that the HG CF tarp is plenty big enough for two if pitch very low.
Do you find it's sometimes a chore to find three trees in just the right place?
Fatter trees... What could be simpler! I love this idea.
And as you say, if the" perfect trees" don't exist where I want them, then I think one of my trekking poles might work as a spreader. I'll...
I was thinking something like the way Detail Man does it in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmPiQ-kO-D8
I'm planning a trip with my wife and hoping that we can both hang under my HG CF 4D tarp.
My current thinking is to hang the two hammocks from the same two trees and improvise a spreader bar at...
Have you seen this thread?
I made lots of expensive mistakes in my early hammocking days. If you can resist these urges it is very easy to DIY a hammock (even without sewing) and excellent suspension system for even less than...
