Great pictures of the puppy!!!
Per the discussion regarding propane vs butane: https://campingsecrets.co.uk/butane-vs-propane/
My wife got me a shirt that says, "I'm an engineer. To save time just assume I'm always right". :-)...
Well sir, I reckon I could bring a few homebrews to patch things up...
kevin, THE mathineer
I'm Kevin (the mathineer). I don't know ifn there be room enough on that mountain fer both of us! :-)
I just read through the posts, and if a location was finalized, I missed it. I'm still planning to make it if I can.
I hope to be able to make it this year. I love Bell Mountain, so that would be fine with me, but I'll try to make it regardless of location.
mathineer
I won't be able to make it on Friday, and Saturday is a remote possibility. I sure wish I could. I've never been to that area, and would like to see it. You kids have fun! :-)
mathineer
If Derek doowah's the whole way, it might work the other way. :-)
mathineer
I might be able to make it. Thanks to TwentyBelow for tipping me off!
I watched one of Shug's videos where he showed the Becket and the J-Bend. From his videos it looked like the J-Bend didn't slide down as much as it tightened, but it did look like it might be a...
I don't mean the loop, I mean the webbing: polyester, mule tape, what?
A while back I switched from using whoopie slings to polyester webbing and cinch buckles mainly because I can hang between trees that are closer together (the whoopie slings add at least a couple of...
Berryman Trail is about a 25 mile loop located near Potosi MO. There are two formal campsites on the trail, and at least one back-country site.
Whites Creek trail in southern MO is about 18 mile...
Why not suggest some locations and times? Where do you normally go to hike/camp etc? I'm in east/central MO, but might be interested depending on time an availability.

For me, the biggest issue with low fill rating is bulk, not weight. Lower fill power means a bulkier item and less room in the pack. Much below 600fp, and you might as well use Climashield, IMHO. ...
Saw the discussion on the Showers Pass socks. For those that use them, how do you like them? Do they really keep your feet dry? What if you wade through water over the top? What about sweaty...
I tried to post a couple of other pics, but they didn't show up for some reason.
mathineer
I'll post plans (they will be a bit spontaneous) - others please do the same!
I did not camp Sat night. I was worried that the established campsites in the valley would be overcrowded, based on...
Sorry about the rotated pic. It posted okay on Facebook. Go figure!

Here is my pic of the falls. I have a few others if anyone is interested.

I took the path less traveled to the falls by taking the south loop rather than the north Mina Sauk section. I...
I hope to be there by about 2:00
My clothes and hammock are treated with permethrin. I haven't had a problem with ticks since I started doing that. It's been a few months (probably late summer) since I treated them, but I keep...
I'm in the process of making a set of 2" straps with 1" webbing sewn on to make connection points every 5". I use 1" straps to my hammock with a carabiner to go around the tree (instead of a Dutch...
Gluten free is fine with me! (and it rhymes too!)
I just saw the opportunity to get in the Tom Waits joke, and I took it!

Free the glutens!
Third page of this map

shows the section with Taum Sauk Mountain and Mina Sauk Falls. The campground is in the...
Dub,
The campsite (where we will be camping Friday night) and parking lot are at the TOP of the mountain. The only water source there is a small pond. On Saturday, we will be backpacking down...
2 lbs, 2.2 oz with stuff sack (flat bottom, 'cause flat bottomed sacks they make the hangin' world go 'round...

I'd hoped to test it out tonight, but life happened instead.
mathineer
All done! All that's left is to fluff it up in the dryer, and make a stuff sack. Oh, and to test drive it! I had to add 3 more ounces of duck down than planned. I calculated using 800fp duck down...
I believe the plan is to camp at Taum Sauk park on Friday evening, the 4th, then backpack out to around the Tollgate on Saturday, the 5th, hike out and head home on Sunday the 6th.
I plan to head...
I think there are about 12 pay sites. Number 9 is my favorite! Number 9, number 9, number 9... Number 6 is my second choice. (And if a six turned out to be 9, well I don't mind...)
I...
There is a large parking lot at the trailhead. If we park there on day 2, there is no charge.
As for the 2" tree strap, I have no idea when that rule came about or how diligent they are about...
I found it: https://mostateparks.com/page/54939/camping-rules-and-regulations
Those are apparently general rules for all Missouri parks.
mathineer
Where is that? I can't find it on the website.
I have camped there many times with standard 1" tree straps.

I checked out the website for Taum Sauk. They state that the group site is available for "non-profit organized youth groups". While we are definitely non-profit, I'm not sure we qualify for the...
I was under the impression that we had pretty much settled on Taum Sauk - camp at the campground on Friday, hike out about 5 miles on Sat. down by the Toll Gate.
If that is the case, then late...
Almost done, except not quite enough down in the vertical chambers. I bought six 3oz bags of 800fp duck down from RSBTR. I used two bags in the 5 horizontal chambers at the foot end, and that...
I did a standing French seam on my winter tarp. I liked it and I think it turned out okay, but I did have some difficulty sewing it. At the time I had problems sewing a seam very close to the edge...
I'm nearing completion of a down top quilt to match the under quilt I made a while back. Should take be down to about 20F, maybe 10 with hammock sock and extra clothes. I'm planning to take it for...
Just saw the new UP insulation, and I'm interested.
How is this stuff in terms of stuffing? (see what I did there? :-)
For instance, if you try to grab a handfull of down and stuff it into a...
3oz wouldn't be near enough for a full length UQ. The top quilt I'm planning will require about 18oz of 800fp down, so based on Dutch's info you'd need about 24 oz of this stuff for the same warmth...
Of course, it depends on dimensions, channel volume, etc. Dutch's website lists the approximate fill power as 625, and says it takes about 30% more than 800 fp (800/625 = 1.28).
mathineer
I just saw this UP insulation. This would be a great way to do a practice down quilt without paying for expensive down.
...
Thanks for the comments. I'm sure you're correct about the snaps in the hem. I'm toying with the idea of making the hem a channel which could accept shock cord and allow use as an underquilt...
I've done some Climashield quilts, and my sewing skills are rudimentary. It you want a first project, I suggest a hammock or stuff sacks. If you're already at that level, then I suggest you...
I'm familiar with the concept, and have watched videos on the construction. It appears to be significantly more difficult to sew, however. In addition, I don't want to be able to move the down...
Here is my planning sheet for the top quilt.

I saw this reply to the question of why Hammock Gear has horizontal baffles at the foot end and vertical at the head end:

Beyond the fact that we like how it looks, the...
I'm getting ready to make my down top quilt, and have a couple of questions.
1. Looks like a lot of commercial TQs have crossways baffles at the foot end, and lengthways baffles at the head end. ...
