It broke.....................
Just wanted to report that I got out last week for a 5 day hike in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Eastern OR. I took the 10 x 10 tarp with the Line Loc guy line adjusters that I posted photos on earlier...
Here's a couple of photos of my 5 x 9. It's not covering a bridge hammock but it may give you an idea of coverage........

I nominate Dancer best girl friend ever.............
This is where I'm at. I tend to carry a 1/2 length pad all the time. I use it for a pack frame, for lounging, to sit on when I'm cooking. It's multi purpose. So, why not incorporate it into my...
I think JRB sells them for quilt suspension. I got mine from a local retailer here in Portland but I've been seeing them more and more at different stores all over. Check you local hardware store as...
Yes, idea good thinks me.
Ah! He lost me with that cockney speak. Makes perfect sense now. Thanks.
Shug............ya lost me. I "will not be" what?
Dutch...........correct, no moving parts. The line makes a 180 degree turn and gets wedged in a channel to keep it in place. Don't know what happened with the link but let's try again. It just links...
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who's struggled with the weight issue of the hammock set up. While I don't really think of myself as a gram weenie, I have worked pretty hard the last 4 years...
Yes, you can use them with existing set ups. I retrofitted one of my existing tarps with them by attaching them to the grosgrain loops with a prussic loop.

I'm using these and must say I really like them. On the ridgelines I use them with a mini biners and they're fast and easy. After tightening them, just finish with a hitch the same way you would for...
For summer use when I'm expecting good weather, I will take my homemade 5 x 9. Plenty of coverage for the little unexpected shower. If you are expecting and anticipating more extreme weather, then...
Thanks.
Ironically, the one night I was cold, I woke up to a moist pad. The other 2 nights I was warm with no condensation issues. Any ideas?
I headed up to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state over the Memorial day weekend to hike the coast route within Olympic National Park. I drove up from Portland on Friday night and spent the...
Mad...........I have the straps and ring buckle system but I choose to not use biners. I just run the strap around the tree, through the loop on the other end of the strap and back to the tri rings...
My son and I have done quite a few double hangs under my 10 x 10 flat tarp and it's been plenty of coverage. But I always end up bringing my 9 x 5 tarp as well just in case we can't hang side by...
When I mixed it I just took a piece of bailing wire (you could use a coat hanger) and bent one end into a kind of a "C" or "U" shape at the bottom and put the other end into my cordless drill and...
Thanks. I just eye balled it. Baseball size sounds pretty close. Maybe a little less for me. When I look at the tube it came out of, it's a 10.1 oz tube and I used about 2/3 of that amount. So about...
I did not wipe off the excess. The sponge applicator took care of that on the application side, but there was some excess that got pushed through to the other side that could have been wiped off....
Okay, I had to try this for myself since I had a bunch of the 1.1 wally world rip stop. I elected to sew it all up first and apply the sil as a last step. I wanted to apply the sil last for a few...
I've made several hammocks with this bug net design (big thanks to Risk and his great site) mostly because I thought it would be the easiest. Instead of sewing it on, I sewed velcro all along one...
That's the best first post I've ever read on any forum. You sound like a great addition to the community. Welcome!
Yehaw! That was funny.
Yeah, I've thought about this numerous times. Once you figured out your sweet spot in the hammock, seems like you could sew/build in sleeves for your pads so that they wouldn't shift around. It's a...
Oh no, THANK YOU and all the mods on this forum. You guys run a great site!
I donated back on Jan 16th and it cleared on the 20th. How long before I get access to the Members Lounge? Will I have to buy one of those groovy "Members Only" jackets from the 80's? Also, do I get...
I agree. Big winter tarps have become very popular and for good reason……all that awesome coverage. But for 3 season and mostly summer use, they are over kill and you pack the extra weight. Both tarps...
Neo....good thread. I just kicked in.
I just started on my third DIY tarp. The first 2 were made from real sil. This one is from the wally world 1.1 ripstop. My plan is to sew it first and then set it up nice and taught to apply the...
I like the Nest set up. Nice!
When I hike with my dog I take my 10 x 10 flat tarp and run one side all the way to the ground. I think it's an instinct thing with dogs that they need to have some...
Ad my name to the ULA crowd. I own both an older ULA P2 and a Vapor Trail, and the ULA is always my choice.
TW,
Thanks, sounds like its pretty comparable in weight to commercial sil. I just didn't want to end up with something that was 2 oz / yd.
Great looking tarp!
I know the DIY sil has been discussed here before. I did a quick search but could not find an answer to my question. I’m curious to know how much per square yard that the 1.1...
PM sent..................
I like to lay the same way. Does anyone know if the BB is available with the foot box on the left side?
Jeff,
It's a great site. When I first discovered hammocking, I spent tons of time on there. It deffinately is a great source if hammocking info.
That Speer's winter tarp looks awesome. Nice pitch!
I agree with Jeff. Big tarps are cool, but you don't need them. Since I've succumb to the ways of the gram weenie movement, I only take my winter tarp if I really have to.
The trend seems to be toward larger winter size tarps. For those who can afford more than one tarp, the idea would be to have one for winter and one for summer use.
I have 2 homemade tarps, one...
I don't think I would define the thru-hiker materials as a "kit". You are getting the raw materials and down and it's up to you to do your homework to figure our your own layout. There is no pattern...
It sounds like a daunting task. Don't sweat it. Get outside and enjoy what's left of the summer. You'll have plenty of time to do it when it's raining sideways again. ;)
I had to get the dog away from the fireworks, so her and I headed to the Minam River Valley in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Eastern Oregon. We did about 30 miles on an in and out. At the 8 mile point...
I still use a 35mm camera. For a couple of extra bucks, the place that developes mine will put all the photos on a cd, making it easy to post your picks.
Actually, the sale includes both reduced member and reduced non-member prices. I'm not a member, but ordered one of the PRO Dyneema Guyline Cord Kits at a very reduced non member price. Of course, if...
I emailed my review a few weeks ago but did not get a reply. Hopefully you received it.
I liked the "any old knot will work" approach when tying it off to a tree. I would like to be there when they have to untie it and end up cutting it. That video is just another example of why...
Yeah, welcome to the forum. Along with Jeff's and Risk's sites, I've found it to be a great wealth of DIY and general hammocking knowledge. Although I've never found the Holly Grail (silnylon) at...
