When you look at instructions for a gathered end hammock they mention tugging the corners before gathering. My sketch puts that into the basic design if I understand...

In any event try it like you said and if it seems promising, I'd consider sewing them.
I'm no expert here, but I think it will effect the lay.

For the UQ question, I'd check out GrgB's recent video on varying hammock lengths.
When he lays at an extreme diagonal in a 12.5' hammock it doesn't look possible a regular UQ would work, but then...

I seem to remember someone tried this before with less than stellar results but maybe they didn't go as far as you did.
