Not a dumb idea, at all. You can't get a true lock on a continuous loop, but stitching would certainly seal the deal.
This is doable, albeit labor intensive. About like needlepoint.;)

Unless I'm missing something, those aren't splices, they're what appear to be Brummel locks. You're asking them to perform outside of their design envelope. Clearly, though, there is some strength...
