I have a Delorme 60W GPS with a spot unit and I love it. Spot may have some limitations but in addition to the rescue beacon the live updated mapping and ability to post checkins make my family feel...
It's quite possible that used as a preventive measure to "discourage" those campers who don't try to keep there food away from wildlife it could result in fewer bears actively seeking out human food....
I don't have a waypoint for the campground but this one is from John and Trudy Phillips DS Mapping Project.

I'll be there. Just confirmed the 17th off with my boss.
Check out midatlantichikes.htm. They have lots of good trips with maps and downloadable track files (if you use a gps).
It's been my experience that September is one of the drier months in Dolly Sods but your right weather there is extremely unstable and it has in fact even been known to snow in September.
DIRECTIONS:
Here is a link to a Google map with Bear Rocks marked as the destination. Bear Rocks is the overlook at Dolly Sods. If you come in south of bear rocks you should pass Red Creek Camp...
I don't know that it affects the ware of the hammock but I keep mine in a customized stuff sack (black bishop style) for quicker set up.
In my case there is definitely more internal space used by hammock gear than by my old tent set up. First I was using a Eureka Solitaire tent, a cheap Slumber Jack ultralight mummy bag, and a cheap...
My Bad!
Dolly Sods is in Pocahontas county pretty much on the back side of Canaan Valley. It will almost certainly be a hike in trip. If HappyCamper is thinking of camping near where we where last year...
September should be a great time frame for this. There's typically less chance of rain on any given weekend in the fall and August can get hot even on the sods. I can't wait no matter what weekend...
Welcome. :D It seems hanging in the mountain state has gotten a lot more popular lately.
Welcome! I'm sure that YJ has done enough to drain your funds. I like to joke "I used to have money now I have a Jeep". Good luck keeping your hammock habit in check.
Living in an apartment my space is tight. I have some of those gray plastic tube legged shelves that happen to take up exactly half my closet. I keep my gear in totes on those shelves. My quilts...
Welcome, it's nice to see hammocking is growing in this state.
Technically that was J.D.'s Firewater but I may have at some point imbibed just a bit of it.
The weather definitely sucked but the company was great and it the chance to test out our gear was excellent. All in all a great way to roll in the new year. Of course the heated bathrooms didn't...
I used that same joke as the title to a blog post awhile back. It may be Sophomoric but it's still funny.
I think this time of year that may be a dead give away.
They claim that what your doing on new years eve is what you'll spend the next year doing. So lets hope that this leads to a year full of great camping trips and not sleeping out side in 18 degree...
I have a Hudson River with the omni foot box and a No Snivler with full omni. When in foot box mode the omni on the Hudson River is pretty much unnoticeable. I certainly would not go with the full...
What a small world. I've got to know was that rock wall at the camp site on the right fork your scout's doing? We figured some scouts had a bit too much energy and needed something to do.
What a great weekend. You can't ask for much more than two day's in the sods with good company and HappyCamper and SkyDog where some of the best. Other than the bobcat we also got to see a hawk...
I here stories like this and when I look into the way back machine for an answer I see some drunken frat boys nailing a $5 net hammock from the local super store between two trees with railroad...
I Know you where not necessarily soliciting opinions but I'll volunteer one any way. I've got an ENO Double Nest. I use a JRB Hudson River for my UQ and a No Sniveller as a top quilt. Both work...
I've not taken a bike to Dolly Sods but I have road on some similar roads and spent a good bit of time on the sods. My advice take it very slowly. There are lose rocks and even worse are the small...
I've been considering this and I'm curious about how big of a stuff sack you needed?
I'm heading to Quebec Run for an overnight (Sat, Sun) with Country_Rat. Your welcome to join us.
I've not done any backpacking in that area so I can't be immensely helpful but since no one else seems to have either I'll offer up this link in case you may find it useful. The West Virginia...
I did pretty much the same things as MacEntyre. I used the largest of the walmart three pack of cheap stuff sacks.
The hang was great and it was nice to put some faces to the names. Thanks to every one involved in putting it on.
The only time I've encountered this it was over misguided understandings of a Hammock in the leave no trace ethos. There has been on occasion a little bit of hostility but after taking the time to...
At this point it looks like I'll be coming unless something changes at work.
It's all good, you should see the threads on our Geocaching group (magpi.us). For the life of me I don't know how every thread can devolve into a discussion about beer (Mmmmm, beer). :D
Yup, that's me. I'm a big guy and I like to "tuck and cover" as you say. Since getting the hammock I have a bad habit of waking up to "naked feet" with half my sleeping bag wrapped around my arms...
I just got my tax refund and I'm considering a new quilt for my hammock. I have a JRB Hudson River for an underquilt and I was thinking of adding a JRB Mt. Rogers for a top quilt. I was just...
Before hammocks I used a Eureka Solitaire tent, sleeping bag, and a self inflating pad. I don't think my weight changed much. I've done some paring down of other gear and I never really measured...
I unclipped the biners and tied a length of cord to the loop the biners where attached to. I now use the biners to attach my webbing around the trees. Here are links to a couple pics if it helps.

That's true but if I'm out and it's less than 14F or more than 112F it means I've screwed up somewhere along the way and the temperature is the least of my concerns. I hike a good bit in the winter...
I've had mine for a little over 10 months now and it's still going. Most of that was summer use with only two trips dipping into the mid thirties so I can't comment on how winter camping would...
I've got one of the These. There cheap, they give you the current time/temp, and while they don't have a temperature log they do give you the low and the high for the past 24 hours. For 9.99 this...
I think the most resource efficient way to do this would probably be to add a column to the table that holds the links to the images. Then you would modify the "Submit Reply" function to update that...
My understanding is that due to a combination of the wind patterns in the area and the elevation we can have freezing temps any time of the year on top the sods and there are only three months where...
I've got the ENO version. I removed the pocket and such which seemed to be most of the weight and leave it attached to my ENO in a "Black Bishop" styled stuff sack. One warning I'll give you, don't...
Just my $.02. I agree that a sewn loop is superior in strength. I'm a fan of using sewn loops because they are less balky and the neatness factor subdues my OCD side. Now I admit I am no where...
Sportsman's guide is having a end of year sale and they have a "Panda" type hammock/bag going for $49. It seems to be rated at 8*F. I thought this might interest a few of you so enjoy.

I've got one on my Double Nest and it works great. I've had it down to almost 32 already (YMMV).
A friend was just telling me a similar story. Him and two buddies where car camping in a large tent. Earlier that evening they had an encounter with a hunter who had lost one of his dogs and was...
I love caching. I've taken to carrying my hammock on longer cache hikes now. It's great to see the jealous looks from my fellow cachers when we stop for lunch and I take a nap. :)
