I weigh 300 and have been held up by 1.1oz. Didn't use it for long tho, but I did try to stress test it. 1.9 would probably be fine based on what other manufacturers are using. I wouldn't have much...
noseeum isn't much lighter than ripstop. There's only 2 types of netting for noseeums, noseeum netting and nanoseeum, everything else has bigger hole sizes AFAIK. If you did use netting on the side,...
I had an old coleman bag, one of the seams was already undone for about an inch or so, so I just grabbed it and pulled. Seperated the entire zipper this way. Took me about a minute. The zipper fabric...
They won't work. The tip is two-parts, it requires the tip to touch something conductive to complete the circuit and heat up. Maybe if you soaked your material in water first?
How important is it...
Don't go hating on camo. There's a bazillion worse colors in the dollar bin at walmart.
I'd go with the deluxe. There's no such thing as too big of a tarp IMO.
That also reminds me. When I was in the boyscouts in southern california, there was no source of water anywhere we went, so we also had to carry around 1 or 1.5 gallons of water PER day. Hard to be...
Thanks, I was really giddy when I find those colors/fabrics at walmart. Olive drab is very hard to find (All they had was 19 feet of the 60" wide stuff). I was using the camo cord they sell in the...

Well, I've got it finished, except for sewing the bugnet on. I'd take pictures, but the entire thing is olive drab, and I think it wouldn't look too photogenic. Now i'm just trying to figure out how...
Gram weenies, heh. I do think some people take it too far. Alot of the 'ultralight' equipment lists I see people have don't include first aid kits, toothbrushes, and misc. I can understand trying to...
I'm cheap and heavy. I don't own any rope that I would be confident would hold as a ridgeline. (I have nylon rope rated to 1200lbs, the heavy stuff they have at home depot). I suppose I could get...
I'm too cheap to buy an underquilt, and doubt I'll do much winter hammocking, so the ZHammock became the wise choice for me to build, as I already have a foam pad, and I don't want to lay directly on...
[QUOTE=hammock engineer;9614]It traps in the heat from your body in the cold.
Ah ha!
I'm thinking of building a similar type of hammock to this, however instead of a load bearing ridgeline,...
I don't get it. What's the point of the nylon cover? The netting alone was enough to make me feel stuffy in my hammock, can't imagine with a nylon cover. Is it supposed to be your rain barrier,...
I had a question about risk's design. I built it, however on the part where the pole goes onto, i just screwed 2 screws so that the pole can 'sit' on those until i tension everything up by getting...
Indeed. I thought I had sil for the longest time, until I went to REI and saw some *real* silnylon stuff. Sil is very noisy and crinkly, like wax paper or tin foil. I've actually seen some cat toys...
It has a definite stopping point when stretching it. It's 50 inches wide, and I can stretch it to 55 inches maximum. It's soft, seems more like cotton than nylon, but it is definitely synthetic, I...
Lol, reminds me of my eternal battle to have straight sewing on my hems. They all look like the path of a drunk driver weaving around and crossing over one another. Makes me sincerely wonder how the...
Bought some fabric which looks ripstop. Probably polyester, doesn't feel like my nylon, but it's definetly synthetic. Anywho, width wise it is definetly stretchy. I can stretch it about 10% or so,...
Been looking for local supplies of rings. I found some at home depot rated to 'safe working load' of 200lbs. Think these are too low for 300lb me? It'd seem you might be able to get away with lower...
Finally found a good use for grommets however. They make good string-holes for the drawstrings on stuff sacks. I don't even bother piercing the hole first, I just attach the grommet, then stab the...
I have done a new-fabric stress test on 1.1oz ripstop vs the 300lb bubba (me). Aside from my whippings slowly slipping off, 1.1oz was enough to hold me up, although the hammock was only 6 feet long (...
Never seen the camping book. I measure the length and the width, and use this crappy kitchen scale I have. Most recent stuff I found was 4 ounces for 8'x4' which was 3.5 square yards, so that's 1.1...
What does the tafetta look like? Does it kinda have that ripstop pattern? Some of the commercial manufacturers recommend heavier stuff than 1.9 for above 250lbs. I use stuff that weighs about 1.9 (i...
Portland Oregon, woot. I have to wonder however, why most of you are from the SE united states... I'm guessing because there aren't many trees in the midwest/southwest, and it's too cold in the north?
Okay, so a silicone bath is *not* a good idea. the silicone was so thick on it, i could draw and make indentations in the layer. painting good, dipping bad.
I'm not ultralight just yet. I expect to carry 30-40lbs pack weight. I'm doing some quick tests on waterproofing baths. I used a can opener and removed the top of a soda can, mixed in the mineral...
I'm using 1" wide tie-down straps for backpacks. They're side by side, so a total of 2 inches wide, and I have them on the fabric an additional 2 inches deep. So far so good. I was thinking about...
The only reinforcing i've done is double hem all the edges, they're all 3 layers thick and 1 inch wide. I then put the webbing side by side like (not on top of each other) and sewed the crap out of...
well, i was hoping to put rivets in just in case i want to shove a stick or hiking pole or whatever through the hole, although i don't have a hiking pole, so it's not too much of a loss. Or are you...
Well, I was using the DWR because that's what I found, and I'm just playing around w/ building stuff while I'm unemployed. Can't afford to be buying Sil and stuff. I did buy some silicone and mineral...
Here's the pic, this is on a double layer of 1" poly webbing (i think, it's the tie-down straps sold in walmart). With an extra large grommet. this is after i've done my strength test.
the factory 4 foot width cuts don't fray at all. if i make a cut and mess with it, it will fray. I have to run my fingers along the cut 4-5 times and it'll start to fray, all the cuts after a while...
Well, they're not grommets, Walmart sells them as 'extra large eyelets' (much cheaper than the grommet kit they sell in sporting goods). I've tried 1 layer of ripstop, 2 layers, 1 layer of webbing, 2...
slowhike:
Well, I did the rubber band + glass + cloth + water test for about an hour or two. Water doesn't go through it. If i wrap it REALLY tight around the kitchen faucet, and pump 100psi of...
I managed to find another bundle of silnylon at wally world. Only problem is, it's 4 feet wide instead of the 5 1/2 feet wide stuff I had bought earlier (it's exactly the same fabric otherwise). I'm...
I just got and learned how to use a sewing machine too. For my hems, I was just using about the densest (tiniest) stitch setting I could (mine is 5 to 0, 0 being the smallest, 5 being the largest...
Joann fabrics had clearance camouflage 1" polypropylene webbing for 50 cents a yard. Dunno if that's nation wide or not, but worth a shot.
Nope, don't know any Kiko. I haven't met many people up here in the 3 years I've been here. Haven't hiked much either.
lol, no, I didn't, it was just a quicky test. i used about 8 wraps of the whipping and pulled it pretty darn tight (I leave 2 feet on each side so I can wrap it around my hands and pull real tight)....
I ended up on the ground from my whipping sliding off the end. It was still coiled and stuck to my support webbing.
Thanks for the feedback. One last Q. Would you use untreated ripstop or DWR for your actual hammock?
After previously scoring some DWR or Silnylon from Wally world, I went back for more. Bought what looked like exactly the same stuff. Wrong. I can blow through it, it wets easily with water. But it...
