Not at all. I did the first three with my son (8, 9 and 10 y/o) and we never had a pulk.
It's usually based at Wise Shelter, which is a short hike in from the parking lot...I think about 1.5 mi. Some people bring pulks and wagons for heavy gear. Some folks go on day hikes and others...
I'll second the warning about ice patches hidden in the shadows of otherwise safe roads. It comes on pretty quick once you gain a little elevation.
