Cuben fiber, 12' (for my Ridgerunner) with doors, gets my vote. Only downside I see to Cuben is that it is translucent.

Great! Thanks!

Tried 4 versions of hiking with an umbrella. From the sun shade hat to the Euopean harness rig. None are satisfactory. But I did quickly notice: Stay out of the wind or it'll be Mary Poppins time.

Don't know where you are but weather moving thru Sunday (23rd) set off my car's alarm twice. First time I've ever had that happen! Tree in front yard was lashing like an enraged octopus. Glad I...
I haven't seen anything from REI. I'm PO'D. Oh well it would probably be a bill, my kind of luck.[emoji849]

A great illustration for why a hammock doesn't need flat ground. I'd advise you not to drop anything though!

I'd add instep crampons for Feb and March.

This storm has elements of the Comet Kohoutek but I certainly hope everyone is safe and the personal impact is minimal.

Try search in White Blaze for the string. There's a link. Don't bother trying to contact the OP he's not following the discussion. Just copy down the file & update it yourself, BIG job tho.

Do you have a Google account? I believe there's one in Google Docs.

I started with a WB GE then switched to a Ridgerunner.
There's a weight difference because of the spreader bars but I'll deal with it. I toss and turn at night so I appreciate the flat lay in my RR...
I saw these hat-umbrellas in the 1980s. Popular aren't they? You can see them everywhere must be a reason, don't you think?

Check out the one on ebay..

Doesn't one of the cottage vendors, JRB?, offer an aluminum hub for the stands?
You'd need to watch for galling with aluminum on aluminum but that might do the trick.

Your local Tractors Supply Comp. may carry it also but will be listed with a generic name.

The tree table seemed like a great idea when I bought it. Have yet to use it. Nothing wrong except I found I didn't like facing a tree while cooking.
Weird? H-yes! Another piece of kit to keep track...

An umbrella that attaches to a tree? I didn't know there was such. How much does it weigh? And who has them?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I went with a set where the length was mention in a long discussion in these forums. I found that it seemed to short. But longer always means heavier.

This is the Euroschrim rig. The umbrella is heavier and it's handle is still not as long as I'd like, the harness weighs half again what is should, and it smacks me in the side of the face when it...
Still working on the Umbrella (?), Parasol (?) idea. Here's my latest effort:
Complete Florida hiker, circa 2016.

I have sent an email to the importer, now in Atlanta, asking for details. Looks like they've added an umbrella with a 2-piece extension handle. The butt can be strapped to a waistbelt and the top...
FYI when I looked, couple months ago, the European Web page listed a chest harness for the umbrella.
Two thoughts - this harness would be more useful when your not wearing a backpack, and, it...
"Bit of a wind break" indeed _always_ keeping in mind that mylar and flame don't mix😨.

I moved from a Blackbird to a Ridge Runner because I'm a side sleeper.
Yeah, I noticed that. A PITA unless you stash h2o
Earlier than that. Seeing MD next week to dot all t's and cross all the i's😊
Sounds like you were doing 20 m/day?
Friday, 03/25. The Weather Channel showed an orange cell pass over Salt Spring last night! How was it where you were?
I'm 6-1 & 206. I found the BB on the small size. Bought a Ridge Runner and didn't look back!
Really should sell that BB as I'm not using it.
A bit of fiddling and I came up with this:

The foam is just a piece of something from the garage and I think the white...
I bought some large silicone rubber bands and medium sized short bungee with cord locks from Amazon. See what I can rig up.
Never? Never.
Never? No never?
Never?
... Well hardly ever.
Maybe April for me, thanks.
Will you post a trip report?
Just ran through Lowe's box store and somebody had left a set of "pool noodles" at one of the registers. The core is hollow on those and it looked to me as if the umbrella handle would just fit in....
So I was piqued enough by this discussion to acquire a Six Moon Designs Silver Shadow umbrella (8 ozs).
I carried it on a 10 mile hike figuring it would be handy in the afternoon. No rain expected...
Hmm, Withlachochee might be a bit far. Try googling Black Prong and there's always Ocala Forest. And I just heard about Colt Creek, that's NW of Lakeland.
2 F'ing much, unfortunately 😣
How far are you willing to drive first?
There's plenty in central part of Fla. some more to the North and west.
Gearing up for an April hike in the Ocala National Forest, here in FL. Weather Underground is predicting high 70s to 80 and dry so maybe I'll get the opportunity to test it.
Broke down and bought one. I may never use it but at 8 ozs it gives me one more answer to how to stay dry(er).
My cf spreader bars came on today. Nice. And quick work from Ruta Locura!
4 pieces instead of 5, and 5.9 Oz for the cf set versus 11.4 for the al set.☺
I ordered a set of the cf spreader bars. My understanding is that they are lighter (by 50%?) and almost as strong at 90° to length (a cf short coming) and will be 2 piece at both the head and the...
I have heard about using trekking poles instead of the spreader bars. But what about the top ends of the trekking poles - they (usually?) don't have the points to fit into the RR suspension.
