I often stamp the snow .... put my snow stake in sideways .... let it sit up 10 or 15 minutes and then tighten my guy outs. Gives a little time for the snow to set up.

I use these as well .... sideways usually ... if the snow is soft, mix it up and wait a wee bit. Use a log or branch as well to augment.
