Hope I can join a hang in the area (now located in the East Bay).
I'm vacationing nearby in Ashland and would love to drive up to/near the band of totality (Corvallis area sounds hot) for a night or two to take advantage of the Eclipse. If anyone has any...
Cmon Oregon Corvallis area! Help out us CA eclipsers!
Don't give up. I will definitely go on a future trip. Just moved to the Bay area from Chicago and looking for an opportunity to hang in some beautiful setting (not too heavy hiking)

My coppery color tc and a bit of the turquoise. I am thinking about throwing one in the washer. I found the fabric a little itchy to lie in. Also, I didn't check one of my sheet bend knots and as I...
You can also search this site for "BWCA" or Quetico or Boundary Waters and see what others say. You'll need a hammock, tarp, bug net and insulation. Seems most of the BW fans like larger tarps, but...
I seem to get them when searching for my shoes while getting out of the hammock. Sucking mustard packs sounds messy if nothing else. But it's making me want a hot dog.
I'm in Lake Zurich now, lived in Deerfield a long time, and know your Preserve reasonably well from fishing it. My hanging has been in the Boundary Waters and some day-hanging in the Skokie Lagoons...
Coming to Alameda this fall!
Arbor on top is just the thing to dress it up. Simple.
Hello from Lake Zurich!
What are some of the variations on the porch mode? Just raise the two side tie outs? Raise the middle of the side with a pole? Pics please.
Although dry, I was miserable due to the constant flapping of my tarp caused by the wind. I repeatedly got up to attempt to tighten the tarp. Assuming you can't avoid the wind, what is the best...
Snobs!
I'm above all that.
Maybe in theory...
PG, how about making the prusik loop (on the strap) long enough to tie to the hammock loop in a Beckett hitch (or some other knot/clip etc), then using the prusik to adjust the length? If it holds,...
Conditions were perfect, and I only slept about an hour, so it is not fully tested at 30, but for a Midwest 3-season, it may be fine.
Great responses. A little visual will help on some of these multi-knot suggestions. Is a slip knot and prusik preferable to a single Beckett though? Would a Kleimheist hold better?
As for buckles...
I like my JRB 10 x 11. About $130 on sale now.
It's 30 degrees, calm, and sunny. I'm using a poncho liner (folded once) sandwiched between a tablecloth hammock and a frogg togs poncho I rigged. It's perfectly comfortable. I don't know if it will...
I like the Beckett hitch for its simplicity, but it's not adjustable. Can I use a tautline hitch (slippery) to connect my long tree strap to the continuous loop at the hammock? Alternatively, can I...
Quick set up. I like it.
When I'm in bed at home, I'm wondering if I wouldn't be more comfortable in a hammock. (Should I tell my wife?)
This is my tablecloth hammock and poncho/poncho uq mod all wrapped up in the suspension. While it was hung, I detached from one side then just started wrapping until I reached the other end. It...
A_S, I used the 60" x 126" and as best I can tell, very good quality. For the price, it's worth it just to experiment. I'm under 6' tall, so it feels plenty big. It's also bigger than my Byer's...
After pouring over the posts in this site and related videos, I finally ordered 2 tablecloths from tableclothsfactory.com (quick and cheap), then set one up in about 10 minutes with some...
Not new, but deserves another rave.

Derek quickly reviews options for connecting your hammock to your suspension, including no hardware knots (e.g.,...
I rigged up a $10 dri-ducks poncho to hang under the hammock. Stuff it with an old down parka, or military poncho liner. I don't do heavy duty winter hanging, but it has kept me warm.
This is a possibility for me. I've been wanting to join a hang.
Last time someone posted this question, my favorite answer was something like, "Hang it in Hawaii."
Tautline hitch. Super simple for tightening ridgelines and guylines. 2 in, 1 out.
Marlin spike hitch. Cool knot for hanging hammock.
Prussik. Simple and perfect for attaching things to the line....
I'd like to see some displays near Chicago. Will any vendors be at shows nearby this fall/winter/spring?
Not sure if this was mentioned, but if you have a detachable hood on your winter parka, try wearing it to sleep. Toasty.
Now I can't remember where I learned this prussik/tarp attachment technique. It's not used to tighten the line, only to stretch the tarp. It also allows for moving the tarp side to side. Can anyone...
I think the key for me was getting it all pre-rigged.
1. The single line has a loop at one end with a small s-biner to clip to the first tree. The other end I tie with a taut-line hitch and...
Kurt, I wanna go with you. More fishing for me!
Nice video, beautiful pike.
Just returned from Gabbro/Gull. Great weather, hammock gear performed perfectly. My 5th trip. Good video, lucky you on the moose. We had a handful of bald eagles, a beaver, yipping coyotes, and good...
Can't we torture them, and then kill them?
Doing a Gabbro Big Eagle Pietro Clearwater loop in mid-Sept.
It works fine for me without modification. I don't use their suspension any more, just some tree friendly straps. If he can deal with the zippers (and I suppose many 6 yr olds can), it's a good...
It doesn't look like a bad tangle. A little time and patience, or ask for help from an experienced angler. We're used to tangles. Also, Byer has its own customer service. Good luck.
No ice fishing? Although an auger is heavy, drilling holes is a good way to warm up. The idea of going to the BW without a fishing pole--can't imagine. Stay safe!
How did you use the structural screws with no eye? What did you hang the hammock from?
I recently made it into the 30's with a pad/poncho/parka combo. In the hammock I used a blue pad with a Hotspot extender. That may have been enough, but under the hammock I had a $10 Dri-Ducks...
Near Questa, NM, just north of Taos. The Wild Rivers area is on the Rio Grande gorge at the confluence of the Red River. Incredible views and access to the rivers. Carson is an expansive forest of...
We had a great trip. My son was in a tent and he was fine except for the noise on the windy night. The fishing would have been better if we knew what we were doing. We're bass fisherman with minimal...
Just back from Lake Cabresto near Questa. I've posted a short report in Trip Reports.
Wild Rivers was closed due to "lapsed funding," but my son and I received a local recommendation in Questa to try Lake Cabresto in the Carson Nat'l Forest. After a difficult drive in a small car, we...
