WHEN? Got to know when
You're hanging from 8' 2x4s?!
Welcome to HF! Sounds like you're making wise choices. Like you, I have found most cottage industry folks to be a delight to work with. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome from Nashville and congrats on the new home and little one on the way. You are located in a pretty amazing area for backpacking. Enjoy!
You mean the sense of extreme accomplishment inversely related to the difficulty of the project?!
Immensely! LOL
Looks awesome! Congrats. I made two KARO UQs, one 2" and one 3" baffles. I count 2" as 20-degrees and 3" as 0-degrees.
You've come to the right place. Welcome!
Hello & Welcome from Nashville, Tennessee! You've come to the right place.
I'll be hanging in the Smokies for Columbus Day weekend!
Welcome back to the South! Take your coat off and set a spell, why dontcha? :)
Welcome to HF! I'm in Kentucky ... for a few hours. LOL Just drove up I-65 from Nashville. On I-264 now by-passing Louisville. Headed to Ann Arbor to visit grandbabies. :)
Why try to out-smart the manufacturer? Want 30, get 30. Want 40, get 40.
To me, the difference is width of baffles sewn in during manufacturing.
To me, over-stuff is different from rating.
I also use visegrips, with a small hammer to tap them. Also have regular vise with soft rubber "inserts" or "covers" to grip pole segments. I find it doesn't take much. Some twisting helps.
Welcome from Nashville.
Are you gonna have a big screen TV with the Clemson game?! LOL
But for real, my schedule is iffy right now. Will let you know. I've always enjoyed visiting and hiking in LBL.
Welcome from Nashville, Tennessee. I jumped on the hammock learning curve in '05 and never tent any more, though I do sometimes "cowboy camp."
Looks good to me. Gotta start somewhere.
BTW, for strength-critical stitching of webbing, studies find that running the stitching rows parallel to the webbing, rather than across it, is actually...
Might want to double-check the geometry of physics on that claim? Depending on angle down from horizontal at which the hammock dangles, the force on each end can be multiples, not fractions, of the...
Nice report! Trents was a lunch stop on a 20-mile day for me, ... and yes, I remember the cheeseburgers, onion rings, pizza, and cold drinks! But dang it, ... we had to walk that half-mile both...
Welcome from Nashville, Tennessee. Sounds as if we hang in some of the same places!
I have an extra I'm willing to part with.
Hello and welcome from Nashville, Tennessee.
Welcome from Nashville. I hiked on the Pinhoti to Cheaha State Park a few years back.
Welcome from Nashville! I enjoying DIY'ing very much.
I have a spare CDT if you'd like one now. "Silver" or "Cloud" color.
Are we doing it all wrong?! LOL ReallyBigMonkey1 shows us how he suspends his "extreme weather" (and widowmaker-proof) shelter.
As he said a few years back:

I have sent two daughters overseas as high school exchange students and have hosted 13 from around the world. The USPS gets 5 stars from me, compared to many other national postal services.
Better hide your billfold from yourself! LOL
Oh, and welcome to the madness.
Mine has protected my UQ from some pretty strong summer thunderstorms blowing rain sideways.
July doesn't guarantee high temps at elevation.
Consider some of the loops in the High Sierras along the John Muir Tral between Yosemite and Mt. Whitney? Awesome trail, views, etc. Several...
Just depends. Perhaps Savage Gulf because it's a tad closer?
South Cumberland SP (aka Savage Gulf).
Frozen Head SP.
Cumberland Trail SP.
Big South Fork NRRA.
GSMNP (aka The Smokies).
Appalachian Trail.
Welcome from Nashville, Tennessee.
Welcome from right up I-65 in Nashville.
I'm on my 4th, 5th, or 6th (?) Pawleys Island hammock. As one begins to fall apart, we order a new one!
But then, I'm from SC and bought my first one on Pawleys Island after watching them being...
4,000', 5,000', and 6,000' elevations in the Southern Appalachian mountains in the dead of winter are no laughing matter for the unprepared.
Welcome from Nashville! I have a daughter who thru-hiked the AT in '04 and got me section-hiking it. I finished in only 14 years! LOL
DITTO. In fact, only recently upgraded ... and that was to get dyneema with doors.
Welcome from middle Tennessee.
Welcome from Nashville! I was briefly in San Diego in September after a little jaunt your way ... thru-hiking the John Muir Trail. :) Hammocked it!
Welcome from Nashville. What part of Tennessee for you? I'll be headed to the Smokies the first week of May.
I really like Charit Creek Lodge, by the way.
Compared to mountain hiking, there are no (or few) "moderately strenuous" miles in the BSF as it's pretty much flat plateau hiking except where trails go down into shallow "gorges" where the streams...
Got my back and butt soaked one night in a gap high on Mt. Mitchell (highest mtn east of the Mississippi). Due to crowded campsite, wasn't able to hang as I wanted. In fact, my rainfly and buddy's...
Took a few years, but as others have confessed, I sat in my UQ once ... all the way to the ground. Made me an expert -- have never done it again! LOL
You're welcome to mine. 9.5 footer.
I am looking more and more doubtful for this weekend.
I like this video from Sawyer itself for valid info.
Sawyer video
Lay your clothing, shoes, whatever on top of your hammock, etc. when you spray your clothing, shoes, whatever. Your hammock gets treated "for free" or so to speak.
Do you care if you set your backpack down or brush up against bushes and ticks hitch a ride? Chiggers?
Spraying is more wasteful AND you're not supposed to breath the stuff, so be more careful. I soak my hammocks in a 5-gallon bucket in which I've mixed one gallon of point-5% Permethrin solution. I...
