Maybe make an extension on the tripod part itself so you could hang a tarp. That way you could do two sections of 5'11" for a total of almost 12 feet. Hanging a 12' hammock will still be a bit tight....

I would say that they would be very beneficial especially since you are thru hike. You never know what weather will bring and when you have the option to baton the hatches it gives such great peace...
