Have you tried playing around with whipping the ends a little differently? Maybe give the edges some more slack.

Hmm. Didn't think about that. What about the ones with the little teeth?
You could use those little brass crimp-on collar thingies. I can't for the life of me think of what they're called. I used a couple when I added a stampede string to my hiking hat.
Edit: I'm...
A year or so ago I picked up a Singer 4411 Heavy Duty.
I am extremely happy with it. It's more than capable for pretty much anything I can throw at it. Plus, they aren't too pricey.
Very carefully.
I didn't really follow any instructions, but gidgetgirl's post helped my a lot in visualizing what needed to be done. All in all, I think I spent a little over a hundred bucks. Could have done it for...
Considering what I'm wearing today, I guess I can't deny it...

haha!
Haha. That's just a goofy pellet gun I got a few years ago for a costume party. Found it in the back of my closet when I was messing with my hammock mounting points. Real guns stay locked in my safe...
Thanks for all the kind words. :)
This was, hands down, the most frustrating camping gear project I've taken on so far. Soooo much sewing and I don't want to do anything with down for a very long...
The width differential depends on the baffle height, max chamber height, and the # of chambers. Where w = finished width, d = differential width, r = arc length of each chamber, h = baffle height,...

Used Boston's mod Catsplat UQ calculator.
77" long, 40" wide, with eight 3" baffles.
This has been my first time using an...
As someone who struggles something fierce with sewing a straight line, I feel silly for not thinking of something like this.
My flask, pipe and tobacco (usually something mellow and sweet. Sharp flavored tobacco makes me thirsty) and usually a little herb for the occasional puff break while hiking.
Looks good to me Ridge!
Took me a week to finish sewing my UQ. Do a baffle, take a break to regain sanity. It is not a fun task.
Dutch sells Amsteel.
He's also got all sorts of other suspension goodies.
Should be alright for whipping, but I wouldn't use paracord for anything that bears a load. Paracord's got quite a bit of stretch.
Even just for whipping, there are better options that are less...
That would be one whoopie sling. You'll need two for a hammock suspension.
Take your desired minimum length, double it, and add 2-3 feet. That will be for one whoopie sling.
So if you want it to adjust down to 6 feet, you'll need about 15ish +/- feet.
Awesome! Thanks for the input. I'll definitely follow your advise on the spacing. That was my big worry.
About how long do you cut the channel pieces?
Reminds me of the hammocks from walmart. They use that thick rope and steel hooks a well.
I slept in a walmart hammock every night for about a year. Never failed on me.
I don't think 2" will have that big of an impact on the finished hammock. Just call it your "ultralight" hammock. :P
Very spiffy. I like that the seams are down on the walls rather than having a seam at the peak.
So it's almost been a month since ya first posted, how are you liking it so far? Anything you would...
Got all the down in my UQ and everything sewn up save for one of the end channels and the long-side channels.
I'm contemplating using short (2-3") pieces of grosgrain spaced a foot or so apart...
My cuts are usually anything but square. I don't like to stress over the small stuff if it's not someone else's money on the line and if it's close enough, that's good enough for me. One thing that...
I'd put the cotton on the inside. Cotton is more soft and kids are sticky enough on their own without adding nylon in the mix.
Rolled hem on the edges is pretty much the modus operandi for edge...
Wow, I'm really digging this idea. I don't suppose you have any pictures of it? :)
They don't have it tested. Others have said it's about 750 and after using it, I'm inclined to agree that's the right ballpark.
I used catsplat's UQ calculator (Actually, I used Boston's mod to CS's calculator which adds length differential but I can't seem to find it)
If you want to do sewn channels from the UQ body...
Yeah, I should have gotten a couple extra oz. Hindsight's always 20/20.
Ordered a few oz. from Marty over at wildernesslogics.com today so The UQ will be finished as soon as that arrives. :)
Okay, the shop-vac method was waaayyyy better. Got all my baffles filled save for one. (Apparently I overstuffed the first 7 by about 15% due to my "meh, close enough" style measuring. oh well)
That is awesome. I'm actually planning a very similar thing except I plan on one more additional little pocket to hole a couple toggles.
Have you thought about sewing a button hole for where the...
I always do a sort of hybrid for my hammocks.
I sew the channel and use a bit of cord to gather the ends in the channels, then I whip the ends and use a continuous loop tied in a sort of doubled...
Hmm. Good call. haha
This is how I attempted it except I used a Tupperware bowl and I did it in my laundry room... I think I'm going to be finding fluff on my clothes for years to come.
Thanks for all the words of...
Welp, I was able to get half an ounce of down in my UQ...
You guys aren't kidding when you warn about this stuff. I'm 1/32 of the way through filling my UQ and this stuff is everywhere! I think...
Cut your fabric to length, roll hem all four sides, whip the short ends, attach to two trees and enjoy.
Making a hammock is usually cheaper. The con being that... I dunno. I guess the con is that...
I had a stitch rat-nest yesterday. Only happened on a small section that I was reinforcing with grosgrain. Now I know why! :)
Raw edges make me nervous. I'd hem them.
Oooohhh. I get it! :D
So the baffle walls are only the length of the inner shell, and the outer shell gets sewn to three sides of the baffle walls.
Big big thanks!
I'm not sure I understand.
As it is currently, if I sewed the baffles to both shells, I'd have ~ 3" of baffle mesh extending past the ends of the inner (shorter) shell. I'm not sure what to do...
I used Boston's mod calculator. It adds to the length so that the ends of the baffles don't get squished.
I'm using mosquito netting for the baffles and they run lengthwise.
****... that...
So I've got all my fabric cut and seams marked out ready to go save for this little conundrum.
For my particular quilt, the inner shell fabric is 79" long and the outer is 85" long. For the baffle...
The elastic is going to need to be really tight to get the pad to conform to your body from under the hammock. Then you'll have to deal with the elastic pulling the edges of your hammock downward......
For when you want to be safe in a hammock collision at highway speeds.
I wouldn't trust stitching in the body of a hammock. I'd be too worried about it compromising the material strength leaving you cold and bruised.
If you really want a pad-pouch, you should...
I can't say anything to the make or model. Definitely take some fabric and try it out if you go to check it out.
I've heard that vintage machines can become more or less worthless if their service...
I also cannot see the pictures.

Yes! Thank you boston! It worked. :D
