I just peered into my crystal ball and I'm seeing Dutch-made grosgrain rollers in the future...
Neat idea! I don't see why a plastic (or even cardboard) milk jug wouldn't work to make one of these out of. Both would have sufficient slickness to allow the material to slide, too.
I camp with teenagers a lot (Scouts, dontcha know...) who have a nasty habit of not respecting other peoples' guylines. They run between tents, often tripping on lines that they've tripped on 5...
Would you mind posting a link to that Knotty mod?
I used a tautline for a few years, back before I got whoopies or rings for my suspension. I had zero problems and zero slippage. If your cord is exceptionally slippery, your results may vary.
That's where I'm at. This has been a forum and gaming name for me for years, but no trail name yet. (Although I bet Roche has thought up a few for me! :scared:)
Lexington isn't too far away, and we've got Red River Gorge too!
I've used climbing gear to hang in a cave overnight. Much better, IMO, than sleeping on the damp, dirty floor.
Second that.
You can also look into hiking in the Cumberland Gap, which would be a bit closer than the Gorge... http://www.nps.gov/cuga/index.htm
Great! Thanks!
I am not an engineer, but it is my belief that you can hang from a 4x4 post, such as those in your pic, without the post breaking. However, the posts may not be anchored in such a manner that they...
That's not far off from how I've done mine. HF straps, climbing biners, aluminum arrow shaft. Works fer me!
I took about 15' of paracord, folded it in half, then tied overhand knots every 1'. Clip a small biner on the end, if you'd like.
I take that "rat tail" and wrap it around one of the trees I'm...
Hello from Lexington!
Welcome! There are several of us in the area; I'm from Lexington!
Hello and welcome, from Lexington, KY! There are a few of us in the area, so you're not alone!
Sounds like you made a "whoopsie" sling instead of a "whoopie" sling.
I use my son's woodburning kit, which uses a blade of sorts, but I bet you could use a soldering iron if you didn't mind cutting with a point instead. I believe either would be a viable and less...
So I made myself a handy dandy, nice and cheap hexagonal tyvek tarp. It's great. Then I decided to make some mesh snakeskins. They're great too. The problem comes when I try to put my snakeskinned...
THAT might work. But then you get cold spots through the button holes...
I don't know about you, but if I were to attach semi-heavy things to the edge hems of my hammock, it would pull those edges down several inches because there's not enough tension on the edges to...
I'm close, but it's not me. Check the forums map and you might find him...?
I used paracord in my suspension (with descender rings) for a few years with no problems. However...I was hanging at the park one afternoon and BOTH ends of my suspension snapped within minutes of...
Yep. The plan was to canoe in to the bank by the cave and sleep inside that night.
I'll have to look into that preventive in case I go again...
I may not be the best qualified to instruct anyone on the use of chocks--I had my placement fail (not the chock, but the placement of the chock) and I shattered my kneecap as a result.
I always end up with pockets of condensation in the little valleys after a hang. But I love it too!
I hang mine from my Rat Tail.
Maybe a dozen. This is the improved version from the first one that tore out on the first hang--I didn't reinforce the corners with double tyvek.
Since my anemometer is too heavy to pack with...
My grommets have been holding just fine, but I figured I'd pull on the collective knowledge of the group before I make another tarp the same way.
Looks like mine! But I hang mine vertically...it would be tough to hang it horizontally like yours.
I made a nice big Tyvek tarp for myself a few months back, and used brass grommets in each of the corners. I reinforced the corners with another layer of Tyvek and added some tape, then grommetted.

Plus, if you want to keep paracord handy for survival situations, it would be much easier to cannibalize one of these than a survival bracelet.
My post on the Rat Tail
No, I'm not talking about the hairstyle. And no, that's not a picture of me! :scared:

This is a little...I'm not even sure if...
Digrat's DIY grit? You tryin' to be funny? ;)
I'm gonna have to post a howto on my Rat Tail.
I'm now famous, but I'm not sure I like the infamy.
Digratting: V. (DIG' raht ing) The act of covering up with your hindparts the trail sign you need to read, especially for a turnoff.
Great...
Hurry home, MedicineMan, and post pictures and video!
It was a pleasure hanging with all of you, and I hope to do it again soon!
You can get a permit (hang tag) pretty much any time from the Shell station at the Slade exit. Head N from the exit and it's dead ahead. From there, basecamp is E on that main road, first turnoff to...
No, not for over 20 miles, but there's a Dairy Queen in Clay City! ;)
So who is going up tonight, and who is going up tomorrow?
THURSDAY
MedicineMan
Hangnout (maybe Friday AM)
FRIDAY
What has two thumbs and is stoked about this hike?
We're already planning a Red River Gorge hang this weekend! Come join us!

After reading up on it, I'm pretty sure it was histo too. Now I know!
Okay, these guys rock. I called to see how long it would take to get to me and they said it hadn't shipped yet (as I figured, it being the holiday) but it would be shipped tomorrow. I asked where...
No prob. I'm getting excited!
My plan now is to meet everyone on Friday around breakfast time. We could hit the trail between 9 and 10. Sound good? (I'm working on getting out there on...
I happened back upon this thread and thought I'd give a way after the fact update: All three of us that went ended up with pneumonia--we called it "cave crud." I'm betting it was due to the fact that...
On the 5-6 miles thing:
There is a spiderweb of trails that start about 1/2 mile from our basecamp. If you want the 5-6 mile route, I've preplanned 3 of them. If you want a 10-miler, I did one of...
That's going in my sig.
Nabbed one! Thanks for the heads-up!
I've been thinking about using orange bags for all sorts of things now, like storing my mess kit, maybe using a bag in a bag as an UQ stuff sack...
