i agree... when i hiked thru the smokies i always managed to hang my hammock in the shelters along the AT -- when full or empty, the best area is usually toward the front by the benches... just wait...
balancing weight/comfort. i really like my papa smurf sock, and wonder if it makes sense to carry a lighter sleeping bag and the sock... my 15 degree bag weighs 2 pounds... my 35 degree bag weighs...
hmmm. thanks -- think i'll try the shorter webbing and more amsteel.
In order to minimize the length of tree hugger webbing used with a whoopie sling does it make sense to use a total webbing length of 3 feet (rather than the typical 6 feet) and fasten a 3 foot or so...
every time i log on here i learn something new. gonna have to try this now. just wanted to say thanks!
that is a kind thing to say. i think i'll just continue to piece together my AT section hike, finish in a couple of years, then attend your... will it be 7th or 8th annual hang... when i don't have...
yup. that was my next question... how hard is it to find the trail in the dark in the highlands, and not end up following the ponies somewhere! no doubt i'll be hiking after and/or before dark/dawn....
actually, looks like troutdale south to the wise shelter is winter-doable in 1 day -- likely sunday... probably hike the section from damascus north on friday/saturday.
what a disappointment! the a capella group concert scheduled for the weekend of this hang just got cancelled (sob sob).... so it looks like i can come, i think. i want to section hike the park that...

pretty exciting!
i just spent three nights with the wintersock in TN snow and am sooooo happy with it. i found that it worked really well to clip the head end to a shock chord prussic on my ridge line so i could...
Is PE foam the stuff that i'd have gotten as protective packing sheets -- once with certainteed vinyl shingle, and once with some window shades? I've been wearing it for a couple of years under a...
...i've got to say, the winter sock is my favorite of the two socks now that i've tried them on my hammock -- there is an advantage to the winter sock fabric being a tad bit more durable than the bug...
...just wanted to thank skilled craftsman Papa Smurf -- and SGT Rock/JustJeff design gurus -- for two spectacular socks i just got in the mail. A tulle bug net, and a Momentum Ripstop winter sock of...
grand trunk ultralight travel hammock, whoopie sling stuff, and a used stock Hennessey silnylon stock tarp bought used from someone on this forum. (going rate for that tarp used is about 30 bucks,...
i know this isn't a laughing matter, but if your sense of humor is still intact, dare i suggest that maybe your bad fortune has something to do with your trail name?
ah, so its called gear lust. i fantasize about the big future hike, say, in five years when i might have more time, and then realize that there isn't a single piece of equipment that i currently...
remember, babies wearing cuben diapers learn how to crawl faster.
i'd be curious to know what the weight difference is between the nano and the ultralight for just the fabric hammock itself. anybody know?
i'm looking for the lightest windproof breathable fabric to make an HH overcover clone... i've sewn side pullouts on an ultralight hammock in the HH locations, and use a winter yeti and jrb modified...
few things are nicer than a water view from your hammock. 100 percent chance of finding perfect spots.
do a hear another vote for someone to manufacture an ultralight bug sock
thanks a lot! think i'll make one of these -- especially since i have until next bug season! no one sells one this light, do they? if anyone did before the spring i'd definitely be on the purchase...
Sarge, I am mightily impressed with your setup. You really haven't compromised on comfort or weather coverage. It is the bug net that has me most interested at this point... I've just been using a...
that's a really good point, i think. and it applies most to water.
funny... i slept there, too! nobody snoring nearby...
I've just depended on deet and a head net for quite a while now... and have found that most nights i start out nervous and put on the head net, but after an hour or so i just end up hanging it over...
well, I tried really hard to get below five pounds for my latest section hike on the AT, inspired by buying a GG Murmur pack and an Edge tarp... and came really really close. I hiked from Sam's Gap...
perfect. thanks. i'll do the same. very excited to try it.
got any advice on how to pack a spinn tarp? i've just gotten one, and i love the idea of more coverage for no more weight. I just can't quite figure out how to roll it up. i really liked keeping...

i guess i was hoping i'd read that someone else does what i do. maybe not! i wear light trail runners that'll dry out pretty easily. if they get wet enough to freeze it is usually in rain or snow...
i used a DD poncho and DD pants on a hike a few weeks ago, walking all day in 35 degree driving rain, and then used the JRB modified DD poncho as an undercover with a jrb torso length uq. the dual...

thanks guys. i'm used to using a stock hh tarp right now, and i also use a stock hh overcover on my simple gathered end hammock when temps fall below thirty, so i don't mind skimpy. remember, the...
... here's my dream hammock.
but i'm just a dreamer, not a maker, unfortunately. i wondered if anyone would consider making and selling me a hammock like this -- my goal is to have a crazy...
...just doing an old crossword puzzle and came across the clue: "hammock quickie." Honest!
The answer was three letters long... and was... NAP!
Thought you all needed to know that.
my short works quite well in my single layer gathered end hammock...warm, comfortable... just open the vent and roll it up with the hammock! he can use it with a larger foam pad, a foam pad turned...
