Thanks for the pics. I ended up making something quite different from yours. I used two single hammocks as the beds and one insulated hammock as an undercover/gear shelf for the whole thing. Planning...
That is one amazing diy project. Is the lay of the 2 beds the same as the Vertex? Heads together and feet apart? Is there a spreader bar at head end?
Thanks
The 2 head ends would be about 36" apart after gathering the ends and adding suspension. Kept apart with a spreader bar. The foot ends are together. Tarp wouldn't be as easy as one hammock but can be...
It is supposed to be a gathered end hammock with 2 beds and no wall that would divide the 2 footbeds. Not a bridge. I made a 1:4 scale mockup last night. Works well except for the shape between the 2...
Doing this on my phone. I can't figure out how to rotate the pic.
Has anyone ever tried something like this?
Bed A sleeps head left. Bed a sleeps head right.
I think that is what I will have to do. Didn't want the seam but can't find fabric wide enough. Need 72" wide. Just didn't want a seam, that's all.
I have a Vivere dbl. Couldn't be happier with it. My seams are triple stiched and I don't lay on them and I'm over 6'.
I found some downproof 1.1 ripstop at diygearsupply.com that is 64" wide.
Sweet.
It just wouldn't breathe because it's basically sealed against your hammock body. It will condense somewhere for sure. An underquilt protecter has a bit of an air gap and a little venting so it will...
I would definately not put a non breathable material there. You need something that breathes or it will condense inside.
Yes I have. Thanks though.
Yes you can but I need downproof, calendered material.
Anyone know where I can find fabric wider than 5'? Has to be downproof and breathable. Anything over 60" wide.
I've already checked the regulars like RSBTR and Dutch.
Thanks guys.
edit:...
If you're going that route, you might as well not sew the hammock body to an thing and just gather with the underlay and whip. That way it's still modular.
Sounds awesome. I like where you're going with this. Nice work.
How did you make sure the insulation didn't compress?
What's the idea with the angles cut in the uqp? Just to save fabric or to hold up in place?
I look forward to it. Please post the link here.
I don't quite understand what you mean Snowball.
I'm going to put the darts by the head and by the feet. No darts in the other corners. Should place the loft where it is needed.
The red line represents what I'm looking for. I'm going to try this but I'm going to add a little extra and over stuff it. Have you made anything like this before snowball?
Thank you for answering...
I am confident doing the darts and I think that is the key to providing loft to where you need it.
I think making this would be a lot simpler than making an underquilt. And it basically is a permanent uqp, but with added insulation.
If this works it will solve many problems:
- adjusting underquilt location
- adjusting underquilt tension
- avoid complexity of constructing underquilt
- it will have a much cleaner look
- it...
I really want it to be a full 2 layer hammock as opposed to JustJeff. I don't want to see or lay on the stitching, and I want a much cleaner look on the outside. My goal is an easily compressible...
1- This has been done before and it works. worst case is that once you get in, you have to sweep some down towards your feet and up you shoulders. Overstuffing fixes most of the problem.
2-...
Awesome. Thanks snowball. That's exactly what I'm talking about. Are you confident with these numbers?
In order to channel or hem the widths I would have to use darts. Otherwise it would just bunch up in the machine.
What you're saying only adds to the width. Do I not have to add to the length as...
Baffles don't create the gap. They just help keep the down evenly dispersed within the underquilt. I'm not concerned about the baffles. Even if the down doesn't work out, I can remove it and replace...
1 How much bigger? Does anyone have experience with this?
2 And how about dart location? I'm thinking of locating the darts to make an asym tub shape. Bigger darts at my head and feet.
3 Does...
Thanks everybody but you are all missing the real question.
All I want is info on how to achieve the gap between the 2 layers. Let's just forget the down and say that I am filling it with space...
I've done lots. Been reading this site for a few years. Just want ideas on how to achieve gap. Namely, sizing and location of darts. Down insulated hammock has been done before but can't find...
Hey guys. Looking for an answer to a problem. I'm making a 2 layer hammock and need to know how to create dead air between the two layers. Looking for about 3" of loft. I want to make sure that...
I'm most worried about the down getting wet, either through rain, condensation, fog, anything. It's a Vivere dbl (ripstop poly? parachute?) which breathes very well. Bottom layer should block a lot...
Both of those look nice. Not too pricy either. Anyone else have recommendations?

Any DWR calandered fabric will likely do. It depends on your budget and your goals (weight, durability, etc.)[/QUOTE]
I have to order it online and cost isn't too much of an issue. Please make a...
So what would be a really good choice then for the bottom fabric. I've spent much time on RSBTR and there are so many fabrics.
That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm going to go ahead with this. There are so many fabrics to choose from at so many price points. What fabrics would be best as the bottom layer?
Are you saying your using a down proof fabric on the bottom of a non calendered hammock layer? No other layer? Not losing down? Please say yes, I really want to try this.
And thanks for the warm...
Thanks for the info Free Home. Do you mean 6" of dart or 6 demos? And why try Clima shield? Can it possibly compare to down as far as compression?
Anybody have advice on dart sizing to achieve about a 3" loft?
More good advice from WV. That's what I wanted to hear (I already harvested the down and it took about 2 hours).
Thanks very much for the info WV. I will heed your advice for sure. Should definitely pin it first for a check. I'm planning on using down I salvaged from thrift store coats. It looks like fairly...
I meant that the bottom layer would cover the whole hammock but with the darts it would hang below like a tub. Just really wondering if the third layer (down proof dwr between down and bottom of...
That's very similar to what I'm thinking except my bottom layer would be the same size as the top so that the whole hammock is insulated at least a little. More down where you need it. Less where you...
The numbers are all dimensions of dart in inches.
What would happen if I put the down directly between my parachute hammock and DWR under-layer? I love how many made up words are on this forum.
This is what I'm thinking for darts. Am I on the right track123113
Sounds right in theory. Just wondering if anyone has tried this and what did they learn?
