Update for up and coming scouts: A Starting point Go Light, Far, and Often
Several years ago I did a scouting project aimed at making Ultra Light backpacking affordable for new scouts. I called it...
Why not use a third hiking pole or CF / aluminum pole for a tri-stand?
Hi Bill, My Son and I went through a couple of sets several years ago. To be fare, we do a lot of backpacking, dump camping, and float trips with the scouts. We also went through a couple of WB's...
No worries, Please do close it down. We have a pretty lively discussion on this topic going on over at "Make Your Own Gear - Hammock Camping" on Facebook.
Several years ago, I did a Wood Badge ticket called the $100 scout, I was able to build a UL kit together for a scout for about $100. Time jump to this year and I am trying to replicate but have hit...
Thanks for the thread. I need a skirt for more privacy while car camping at scout trips. Will use on super fly with internal pole mods. I just ordered 12 yards of cheep poly at...
Josh beefed up the Ruta Locura ferrules. He initially shipped hollow ferrules. Since our early hx of breakage of the head poles we haven't had a failure in awhile, probably due to solid ferrules.
So, just back from trying out the Kelty poles last night on a full moon kayak beach trek. They worked well. The DIY sand stakes held. I also tried out mule tape for the first time. 174829174830
I've had the rutalocura for 3 years now which multiple nights. I've broken two sections due to rigging the WBBridge too tight.
The best setup so far is to have rutalocura build 4 sections 15.25...

I like the Tensla solo but wish we could just purchase the poles. $80 for two poles is kinda expensive.
We already have two heavy Kelty tarp poles that I'm thinking about trying out. Has anyone...
$80 for two poles is kinda expensive. I already have two heavy Kelty tarp poles. Has anyone used these tarp poles as a Tensa solo? I've used bamboo poles, which are probably not as strong as the...
It’s funny how this tread morphed into a great thread concerning the cost and evolution of losing gear weight. My $.02 from 15 years being an obsessed backpacking dad and scouter.
I have learned...
I have the old style 1 door WB Ridge runner sock.
Dynaglide dog bones fit through the groms much easier than the stock WB dog Dynema dog bones.
The 1 door model is very prone to condensation. I...
I have a few hundred AT miles and many scout trips on the Ruta Locura CF poles in my Warbonnet Ridge-runner. The best configuration we've found is to have 5 equal sections made. You will end up...
If you wrap 1" Dyneema straps twice around the tree doesn't it count as 2" webbing :-)
This past weekend was the second time in three years that I've broken a carbon head spreader bars. Both times I've strung the hammock too tight, out of necessity, due to a long distance between trees...
Totally agree, we tried the zpads with the same results. I'd rather go with 2-3 layers of Climashield. I made a 40 degree UQ out of this for my bridge. At least it breaths....
My son and I have the zPacks with doors. I've had one for four years and the boy stole it to complete the AT last year. I purchased another without hesitation. His now has 3 years and an AT trek...
Great work on the wife's bridge weight reduction.
The two-piece hiking poles at ruta locura will perfectly fit the foot end of the bridge when compressed. I also had Josh ([email protected])...
"Just Bill" Kudos for pushing the envelope.
Between my son and I we are into 4 pairs of Rota Locura poles over the past few years. My son just finished the AT this year with a WBBr using these...

I had this problem with a tent several years ago, an old MSR Bakers Tent with very smelly seam sealer all over it. I washed it and it didn't come off. I started sprinkling cornstarch on it and it...
Beautiful sewmanship WV. Some Dutch bling, dynema string, Roca CF poles and that will one light weight bridge.
Our worse downpour under the Super Fly

Just right. I have many miles on the Zpacks CF tarp with doors. My son used one on his AT trek this year as well. I've had no problems with coverage using it with both gathered ends and the WBBridge....
watch out for smellables.
Yana Hiking Pole Bridge Adapter from Ruta Locura just received and tried out. Josh threw in the adapters when I purchased the poles. The poles strap easily pulls out and the adapter pops right in....
Beautiful work!
A good soapy soak in the tube and rinse in the shower. Hang mine for storage with quilts between trips.
That Kings net weighs 1.38 lbs, if Billn is thru hiking that's too heavy
https://dutchwaregear.com/bottom-entry-bugnet.html Weight: 10 footer = 6.5 ounces / 11 footer = 7 ounces
I just...

Hope your hike is going well. I just flew out to Maine and joined my son in the 100-Mile Wilderness at the end of his AT. That's him in the pic.;)

Ironically his hiking poles break down to 28 inches (see URL above) The foot section of the RR is 28.5. I might buy his hiking poles if he could...
That's the Superfly: Ridgeline Length: 11’0” Width: 10’0”. It's rigged pretty low.

The RR provides great back support. Try a pillow behind your knees for additional support. This works for me in a GE and Bridge as well.
We have been in RRs for several years and are very happy with them.
Weight is the biggest factor but you can work to get the weight down and compensate elsewhere.
Ironically, the Lynx UQs weigh...
I believe the black rubber bands might also be referenced as Ranger Bands?
I use small budgies on the 0 full Lynx because the stock bands froze on me several years ago and lost their elasticity. The...
I use the SuperFly with the RR without any issues. I like the ability to use the doors as added coverage in a pinch. Since purchasing a CF tarp I use the SuperFly for car camping with the scouts and...
I'm 200lbs wet and use these poles. Have had 1 head section break, but it was likely that I hung the WBRR too tight. Going on 2 years and lots of hangs with these. Now have the ZimmerBuilt Quickstep...
look at the G4 plans. I built this pack awhile ago with these plans and the straps are hollow to allow with velcro tabs. This allows for changing pad thickness or using clothing as the pads to save...
I just received a Zimmerbuilt Quickstep. I have a zpacks CF tarp and the HG skake skin. Is this similar to your setup?151413
The other hiker with Reddmage who is a hanger is my son. He's about 5-6 days behind Quinn now. Follow him at https://www.instagram.com/quinnbrookins/. He's using a WBRR, carbon spreader bars, a 20 WB...
Mine-Dynaglide dog bones, Dutch Kevlar straps and Ti Cinch buckles. I use the spindrift when it is lower than 30 combined wit h the 0 Lynx UQ.
I just rigged my son's with whoopies to WHOOPIE HOOKS...
I posted this yesterday and it is relevant to this thread. As far as I know he has not had an UQ failure yet through the first few weeks on the AT, the fog/mist is as much a problem as out right...
My son is on his AT thru as we speak. He's battling with the AT mist / fog and potential dampening of his UQ. Gear: 20F 900 fill FL UQ, 0F 900 fill TQ, open gather end 11ft hammock, 12 foot CF tarp...
is fabreeze a smellable?
My son Quinn is starting the AT in two weeks. Look for a young guy packing a ULA Epic with Scout, Philmont Ranger and and El Camino patches. He might be the next "Patches".
We just ordered the Xero...
