Definitely want to try this out soon. Do you think that install of PVC for the ridge pole you could use EMT conduit? I'm thinking 3/4 inch cut in a couple sections with a shorter piece of 1/2 inch...

That is pretty much the exact design I've been using for the past month or so and it works very well. Just upgraded to a 90x156 tablecloth hammock last week. Mine is 11.5 ft long and 7 ft tall made...
Go for it; its a fun project to do and pretty easy. Always satisfying to be out in the cold and kept warm by something you made.
Thanks guys! Got the kangaroo pocket cleaned up. Just need to figure out how to make it so I can snug the neck/hood up this weekend.
Thanks! Yep, the pocket serves as hand warmer & storage. The hand warmer part turned out decent but I kinda botched the kangaroo pouch portion - got the sizes off a bit so the cover flap barely...
Test hike went well - kept me comfortable at ~18*F, with no wind (maybe need to try a canvas one to help cut that). Felt like with the breathablity helped regulate temp - didn't have to zip/unzip to...
Probably took me around 5-6 hours spread out over a few evenings & this afternoon.
Put together a wool blanket anorak this week. Used a Harbor Freight wool blend blanket (80% wool/20% polyester) - cost me a whole $8 on sale. It isn't the nicest blanket but aint too bad - I did...
Nice work! Started making one myself yesterday. Ratdog, if you have a harbor freight nearby their wool blend blankets (80% wool/20% poly) are on sale for $8 and regular price is only $10 so cheap...
I did a differential cut on my Climashield TQs but I did it to preserve the loft not to help it drape over me. (Don't think the extra ~1.5inches would even offer much to drape anyway.)
Some TQs do...
Nice find been waiting for a sale on these.
Tempting....So what's the difference between this stuff at 20D and something like the DIY Gear Supply silnylon that's 30D?
couple layers of fleece between the double layers works well. Considering getting a cheap twin comforter to sew on as uq
Well I wouldn't go charging through the bush in one but the material isn't that delicate. Certainly more than enough for our re-purposing (and perfectly reasonable for its intended use too).
I...
I'd go long, it'll give you more flexibility. It'd suck to be out and have it be a bit colder than expected and not be able to just pull that TQ up a bit more and go back to sleep. At least that was...
Yeah, overwhelming is a good description for the place. I guess if you've got the time to hunt through everything and get lucky enough to find some lighter weight ripstop maybe it's a decent deal....
Welcome aboard!
I'm in.
Love the Element stove I picked up last Thanksgiving.
Darn it, didn't work they way I thought. :cursing: Looks like you're stuck with having to already know the post's long number rather than just that it's #5 in the thread :( Grabbing the link from the...
Couple of possibilities depending on what exactly you mean.
From a threads list, to the left of the thread title is a down arrow icon, clicking that will take you to the first unread post in the...
I'm busy this weekend - have fun folks!
I'd be up for something depending on the dates; gotta get out soon and test the gear I've been DIYing.
Nice work man, that looks really slick
Yes, for the differential cut on a UQ you're more concerned with accounting for the side-to-side curve of the occupied hammock than head-to-foot.
If you haven't seen it yet, maybe check out...
I'd go with 2x your expected loft. For my synthetic TQ I used pleats to take up the difference.
Finally got around to making the 2nd of the pair this time with snaps on the footbox. It is about an inch larger than the first so that the two can be nested without the inner one being compressed....
That's a nice looking hammock Caveman. :thumbup1:
Heavier weight fabric for the durability might be a good idea.
Derek/Dejoha has a post on this topic over at http://theultimatehang.com/2013/07/tips-on-hammock-camping-with-kids/
Lost_Biker, how'd you do the shape of this? Is it simply two matching half moons or is it more sculpted to fit the shape of the occupied hammock?
That looks awesome!
That's only water resistant. You could always try the diy silicone dunk with some of the plain ripstop.
If you're going to make an opening for the tie-out to pass through I'd edge it with some grosgrain to provide tear resistance. Maybe attach the cord with a mini carabiner so you can unhook when you...
4 hammocks huh, do yourself a favor and make one of PrisonerOfGravity's rolled hem guides and hemming up those hammocks will go a lot faster & smoother!
Afton: Noise hasn't been a problem when I've been out there during the summer. Firewood is something like $4 all you can cut. There's a big pile of basically rough cut boards by the pump. There's a...
Not quite 6' 1". I like the lay of this longer hammock vs my shorter GTUL and previous DIY (somewhere between 9.5 & 10ft don't recall right off).
So there's room for loft - assuming you're using ~3" baffles you also need the same 3" on the outer sides.

Thank you sir! Pretty sure I could easily cut my time in half. Was actually very surprised how easily & quickly actually sewing on the netting was, think that only took an hour.
Being now part way through my DIY fest of 2 Climashield TQs, a DL hammock with Bugnet & hammock sock I think the answer depends very much on how you value your time. I'll have paid for the materials...
Thank you (and the many many others here) for sharing your projects & pics and making it all seem so totally reasonable to try! :shades:
LOL the fiddling never ends does it? I'm trying to think of a clever way to add a top cover without another zipper.
Don't know that I'll be making more - they definitely take time. Daughter was...
Nice job man!
Having been led astray by Lost_Biker and his bugnet howto and XTrekker's recent suspension & hammock pics I started work on my own DL hammock Thursday night and finally finished it this morning....
I sewed a rectangle flap of netting just inside the opening that I can then lay across the remaining gap.
Looking good!
That Climashield is wonderful stuff to work with. Just finished up a TQ this weekend and I was amazed how sturdy it was. Was a bit leery going into it but once I felt it and moved it around a bit my...
I think the 1/8" is usually recommended for UQ suspensions as it'll hold the weight up a bit better (and a PLUQ is a bit heavy).
As far as the tarp tensioners you mentioned - the instructions...
My daughter's got a purple hammock she loves too cause her daddy made it for her - ain't that feeling great? :)
You know it's funny, with all the thinking about what dimensions I'd use and how I'd put it together the thread injector settings barely crossed my mind  I did do a test run with a bit of...
Made one of these with just some cereal box cardboard, taped it down to thread injector base, got out some scrap fabric and can confirm that it works like a charm! This is gonna come in...
Whipped together a Climashield TQ this weekend. (Well perhaps "whipped together" implies less time that it really took - I made one anyway )
