You should be fine with the paracord for the ridgeline and footrest. I use 2mm utility cord for mine and I have never had a problem.
You will be amazed at how much more comfortable that ridgeline...
Oh and on a side-note, while it might be safer to stitch that bury in, I never did and haven't had any problems with it. That said, Hang at your own risk ;)
Note: The catchy song I mentioned in...
This one should work. Pretty catchy song to boot!

I like to just put it up roughly level. If one side ends up a bit higher than the other I will put my feet on that side. In general, though, I don't think it has a big effect on my comfort.
I...
Definitely well put. I put way more time into my DIY tarp then I hoped I would have to (I do think subsequent ones would go faster, though). I think it's great to support these cottage industries,...
I understand, and I completely agree that it is well worth the time and experience to DIY without any money savings. That said, I definitely saved money on DIY so far.
The first hammock I made...
Not so sure Karma landed me here, but I had gone on my first hammock hike because I was too cheap to buy a tent and when I got back (and thawed) I decided to google hammock camping and eventually...
I use a 1.1 ounce singe layer DIY and it is very comfortable. I weigh in at 200 pounds give or take a couple. I really love how light it is and have no complaints with it. I am less certain of its...
From what I've seen and heard, the only problem with the ENO bug net is the weight (pretty heavy), but if that's not a big concern for you then I think it's a good option. As shug said, Warbonnet...
Awesome report! That picture of the sunrise from camp is amazing. Well Done.
I think that topquilts are the ideal way to go. You can find ones designed or hammocks at hammockgear.com, warbonnet's site, Arrow Head equipment, and other places. The fact is, sleeping bags do...
Definitely not. The sole is just a tiny bit thicker due to what they added for better traction. The same is true of the bikilas. It's a difference of 3mm vs 4mm I believe.
As far as I know, the material should work fine as a tarp, but I don't know for sure.
An overcover is material that goes over the top of your hammock to keep you warmer. It will go right over the...
Welcome!
I hope the testing goes well for you. Good Luck!
I have used a really thin blue CCF pad (1/4 inch maybe) that I found up in our attic down to 7 degrees with just a 15 degree synthetic bag. I added wings to the pad for my wide shoulders (used duct...
I think that the easiest way to drop the skill level on a DIY tarp is to make one without caternary cuts. If you do that, it's really only a matter of cutting the shape you want, making one seam,...
I think you can definitely save weight with a DIY, especially if you really only use 3 yards of fabric. If weight really is your main concern, though, I would order it online. For one, it will be a...
Are you looking to do bug netting that is integrated into the hammock, like a hennessy, or something that is not attached and goes around the hammock, like the ENO Guardian?
As for a good length and width for a fly, I would take a look at some of the dimensions of tarps made by some of the cottage industries on here. It's gonna depend on what kind of conditions you're...
Oh and also, I would take s1125r's advice on them over the KSOs. The traction is much better, especially when it's wet at all. There is a little less feeling of being barefoot, though, as the soles...
I have a pair of treksports that I run in and I really like them. I am planning on working from running in them, to hiking in them, and then into trailrunning in them.
My worst night came on my first night of hammocking.
I had not yet stumbled on the wealth of information here on HF and really didn't know anything about hammocks, but was just too cheap to buy a...
Another quick piece of advice is that when I began hanging, I did not sleep diagonally enough. Try turning more than you think is reasonable. The other thing, to echo the advice of others who already...
I used a piece of cardboard and used a tape measure to measure the corresponding length and height measurements. It is a pain in the butt, but it worked.
Yeah, that was what I was envisioning. Very neat, I haven't seen that before.
You're right, but you could get around it with extra bug netting, allowing for more pitch angles. That would...
I live in the Big Easy at the moment ;)
I don't use a ground cloth. I guess I never saw the need. I can see the use if you need to go to the ground, but I want to move away from carrying a pad and...
Ha ha, well speak of the devil. "NickRp" is not the Original Poster Chris, "nickbonwz" is and he never mentioned being married.
Looks like Diezel may not have been the one that didn't read...
I was just wondering about an integrated hammock, tarp and bug netting system. I am envisioning the bug netting attaching along the edge of the hammock to the underside of the tarp.
I thought this...
 I'm not sure I would trust just sandbags, but I stay clear of being shot at when sleeping if I can help it. Trooper is right that all of these hammocks will stand the test of time, though,...
You could probably use a garda hitch, but I believe many people have stopped using that system due to possible premature wear on the cord. I don't personally know enough to tell you what knots would...
Ber, you're right, the dimensions are different than I was thinking of, and I think you're right that this tarp will do fine.
You know, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is DIY. It's not too...
As best I could tell, the craftsmanship was great, and the material worked. The problem I've experienced has been with the coverage only. Like I said, if slowalk can get it to work, then more power...
Sclittlefield is right, but you could probably make it work. An undercover would be great, though.
I think that you're right that the tarp is working as long as it's blocking out the elements, but I don't think the DryFly does that. I went on a hike just a couple of weeks ago and my buddy had an...
I am currently using an easton tent stake that I picked up at REI for 2.50$, I think. Here it is. To cut it down, I used a small tubing cutter that I picked up from Lowes for about 5$. I also used it...
Welcome! Glad to hear the hammock is working out for you, and that you already getting into the DIY.
Post us some pictures of that tarp!
I weigh 200 pounds and I use a single layer of 1.1 ounce ripstop nylon that I got from Backwoods Daydreamer. The service was great and the owner is a member here. That said, no matter what the weight...
I use a single layer 1.1 and it works great for me at the same weight as you. That said, I think I am going to make a double layer 1.1 to old a pad still for my next hammock. If you do a DL 1.1, it...
Welcome! I have a DIY Hammock and I like it way better than my ENO Single Nest. Good Luck with yours!
Honestly, I would say just jump into it. My hammock doesn't have a straight stitch on it,...
Oops, didn't see this part. I got mine from Scott at backwoodsdaydreamer.com. Great service and some of the best prices I found.
I am 200 pounds and use a single layer of 1.1 ounce nylon. That said, lots of people at my weight and lighter find 1.1 ounce to be too stretchy. I would say it depends a lot on whether you're trying...
Y'all are definitely right that experience is the best teacher. Also, I feel like the best stories come from the worst trips ;)
I definitely did stay true to form, and you're totally right,...
Ha ha, it was cold, for sure, but not unbearable. UQ definitely the way to go mehinks ;)
Thanks Shug :D
Thanks. The hammock really wasn't hard at all. The tarp was real time consuming,...
Well, you are correct that I had no underquilt. It can definitely be done with just a pad. I went down to 7 degrees Farhenheit, but I wasn't exactly warm. You need to add some kind of additions to go...
You are 100% correct. I intended to be more prepared, but I had to do the best with what I had. I just did a trip report on it that will give a bit more background here.
Thanks for the tips...
Well, I am sorry to say that I had ill-fated hammock trip. I count it as a success because I got to test a lot of the gear that I made and because I learned a whole lot, but my friend and I had...
Here is a showcase of the gear that I have made. I took all of it on a hang I did last week that I will be posting a trip report on soon.
The first three pictures are of a 1.1 ounce single layer...
The advantage of the biner is not only for convenience, although that is one of the advantages. Those of us from climbing backgrounds have it hammered into our skulls that you never want webbing...
Thanks for the tips all. I am too poor to buy down booties, though.
I did change socks. I think I had condensation issues and that may have had a lot to do with it. I can't tell if it was in...
