Is there any record of a hammocker being struck by lightning? I've not heard of any. I'd find other things to be worried about like driving your car. The statistics are much more concerning. :)

I have an older HH expedition asym and had the 3/4 zip mod by 2qzq (nothing but great things to say about them.) I also kept the bottom entry open but am considering sewing it shut because I never...
I use a Speer Snugfit and would agree that the rating is conservative at 30 degrees. I think it could easily keep you warm down to twenty with a good bag/quilt and a midweight baselayer. I carry a...
I have the GG Thinlight wide pad you speak of. I fold it in half width-wise then roll it looseley so that it lines the inside of my pack. I then put my packliner in the middle of the roll and stuff...
If you hang your hammock off center between two trees you will need to adjust the height of the longer end so that your hammock hangs right unless you are putting max tension on your suspension.
The same happened to me when I tried tensioners on the tarp ridgeline. It's also difficult to get equal tension to keep your tarp centered at the head and foot ends.
I like the Y stakes because they seem to hold better than shephards hooks. Jacks R' Better sells Vargo Titanium Ascent Y stakes (0.3 oz, 6.25" long) for $3.95 each. They sell them individually. I...
I just want to know how on earth he got there and what he was after.
Will do. I'm going to break down and buy a little thermometer so I can post accurate temps. I usually don't carry one but for the sake of science...
My best friend and hiking partner bought a HH shortly after a trip out with him in tent and I in my HH. He woke up stiff and didn't sleep well in his tent while I slept like a baby in my hammock. ...
I have a GG Thinlight wide 1/4" and regular 3/8" and they actually do still slide around some but not as much as some of the other pads. I just thought I would mention it so you aren't too...
Yeah, I thought about that. Perhaps if I did a few feet then cut and repeat.
True, but what would be the point of doing it this way? Weight savings? If so I can see shaving a few oz that way by eliminating the hardware on one side but it wouldn't be that significant.
I've considered doing this with my NF Beeline 900 but haven't gotten up the guts yet. It's really too narrow a bag for me anyway but I sure did pay a pretty penny for it. It would suck to ruin it. ...
In my limited experience, the closer you are to centered the better the hang. It seems, however, that you could adjust the height of the suspension ropes to keep the adjustable end from sagging to...
It sounds like you don't plan on re-tying or adjusting the "fixed" end. If that is so, it would seem to me that your tree selection would be somewhat limited to get a good hang. The farther apart...
Interesting....keep us posted on how your tests go. Also post suspension weights etc. And welcome to the forum.
Are you referring to the ring buckle setup? If so REI sells the SMC lightweight aluminum rings if there is one near you. Ed Speer sells the majority favored polyester 1" webbing and ships very...
Two tarps don't make sense to me. Wouldn't it be better to just replace the smaller tarp with a larger one?
My experiences with the stock HH tarp that comes with the Expedition Asym led me to make my own caternary tarp. I got wet on three separate occasions where the rain blew under the sparsely covered...
Yes, I use a HH Exped Asym. The ridgeline doesn't seem to stretchy to me so I'm not sure. I've since shortened it a tad and made it detacheable.
I found 10 yds of forest green 1.1 oz sil at WM awhile back and made my CatTarp out of it so it can be found. Haven't found any since.
Frog,
Just a word of encouragement. I too felt a bit claustrophobic in my HH when I first got it. Mostly due to having difficulty moving around and getting situated in it. After spending...
ditto that. Thanks.
Hmmm. Let me see if I can talk my wife into letting me go. I've been pushing it lately but you never know. I told her I wanted to get one more overnighter in before my GSMNP trip mid October. I...
Me too. From other comments I have seen, Tom seems good about replacing defective hammocks.
Hehe...I have put on frozen boots before. It's not fun.
I tried rubber tensioners on the tarp ridge and found that it makes it very difficult to center the tarp over the hammock correctly because of the play in the bands. Of course, when I did this I was...
I think that's a definite possibility considering how much tighter you are able to pitch. I worried that it would snap all night long. Luckily it didn't. While the flatness of the hammock was very...
Congrats on the first successful cool weather hang. Much better than my first few attempts at keeping warm and dry.
That's what I have been using. I also bought a larger cone from Joanne Fabrics thinking it was the same stuff but it turns out that it is much thinner than what I bought at Walmart.
I use Ketly Triptease and keep it attached to my tarp and keep double bowlines tied and the knot pulled all the way towards the tarp. It shortens and doubles the line and keeps it from getting...
Of those who just place their boots under their hammocks, do you ever get windblown rain or critters in your boots? As a fairly new hanger I have contemplated this a lot and have yet to decide what...
The ridgeline stretching makes sense now that you mention it. Thanks for the info fellas.
I recently replaced my stock support rope with rings buckles and webbing on my HH exped asym. I am noticing that I can hang the hammock much tighter now than with the stock ropes. This past weekend...
I have been using a PrincetonTec Scout for awhile now and it has served me well but the Petzl E+ looks real enticing. I may have to get one. Thanks for the info.
I've been looking at the Snugfit also and really appreciate the info. I would probably have gone with a JRB but I just can't get over the Kelly Green color. I like to stealth camp and I'm afraid...
I used a 3/8", wide CCF pad with a 3/4 length inflateable InsulMat a couple days ago down into the mid 40's with 14 mph wind gusts and was plenty warm with a silkweight baselayer, fleece beanie, and...
I hang my camp shoes from my ridgeline and out the bottom entry hole then velcro around them. That way they are close by if I need to take a late night stroll. It also keeps the critters out of my...

The plastic stock clips on my HH bent early on for me. I like a taut tarp. They just didn't function well in my opinion....
Definitely tie your tarp to the tree lower than your hammock. I tie mine about six inches lower and my ridgeline is still six inches lower than my tarp once I get in. I use a homemade tarp modeled...
Welcome to the forum Boose! I don't have experience with dual hanging but here is a link to a thread that may be of use:

Good luck.
I've been contemplating the best insulation for the functionality, comfort, and price and just can't seem to make up my mind. Here's my quandry:
1) Down underquilts seem to be the most...
I use Kelty Triptease 10' at four corner tie-outs with Titanium Y stakes. I loop around the stakes and tie a double bowline to adjust. I keep the guylines atatched to the tarp and roll them up and...
I made my own MacCat/BlackCat standard with forrest green Walmart 1.1 ripstop silnyl with black 1.9 reinforcements. The colors look great together and match my HH! Nice thing about DIY is you can...
I'm heading to Charles C. Deam Wilderness in my home state for a solo overnight hang Friday morning. I can't wait. I have lots of new mods and DIY stuff to field test.
I was thinking of the irregularly shaped ones that you twist with your thumb and forefinger to loosen. This would fix the problem some are having with difficulty loosening their buckles when cinched...
I used to use liners and synthetic or wool socks in combination but since have gone to just light hiking socks and a more breathable and lighter shoe and haven't had a blister since. I can relate to...
Has anyone tried the two piece buckles that come on most climbing harnesses. Seems like that would be an option and would be easier to loosen. I would try it out but I can't seem to find any on the...
I finally finished my Homemade Cat Tarp today. The seam sealer is drying as I type. I ended up going with a 12' x 8' tarp. The gal at Wal-mart told me the material was only 44" but I measured and...
