I'm 6'3" and the PLUQ works for me, folded over. It starts at my neck, not my head - my head has a pillow, insulation enough... and I guess I am sideways enough (or bending my knees a bit) so that...

You might think I would learn after the first time, but I've actually experienced a couple failures. My first tablecloth hammock lasted awhile - 10-15 nights over the course of a year, a bunch of...
Tablecloth hammock
If you still have an XL unspoken for, or something falls through, I'll take it.
You could build 2-3 PLUQs for under $100... comfy, warm down to 40ish (and you can supplement with pads, if desired).. not the lightest or smallest-packaged though.
Snowball, you raise some good points, and made me think about it a bit.
I came up with a few reasons why I've been focused on the tablecloth as fabric. It is low cost, making it is easier to...
http://www.tableclothsfactory.com/Crinkle-Taffeta-tablecloths-Table-Linens-Chair-Covers-s/136.htm is where I bought from.
I used the last one for ~2 years, maybe a total of 20 nights or so.. I'm...
awilhtme13, I'm too lazy to search, but I've seen single layer figures of 300#...
New question to you all: if building a double layer tablecloth hammock, does one "need" to sew the layers...
Thanks for the thoughts/input, folks. Rip could have been due to a sharp pocket-object, or a underlying weakness in the fabric itself, will never really know I guess.
Trying to decide on what to...
Made a tablecloth hammock a couple years ago - worked fine for maybe a total of 25 nights, plus daytime lounging etc. A couple of scouts were chilling in it on a backpacking trip this weekend (not...
Meant to add that it would give you good practice with a UQ (vs. a pad), and you could maybe experiment with it in full vs. 3/4 length configurations.
My $0.02: build a PLUQ for $40, good down to 40 degrees or so.. then get whatever you need for winter weather up through 40- 50 degrees. Sure, it is bulky and not super light, but it's nice and...
Wow, looks great! I'm jealous.. :-)
congrats and good luck with the Kelty!
Kelty Noah 12 is a good tarp for the money, IMHO. Not the lightest, true, but big, flexible, and it should last awhile. I borrowed a heavily used one for a bit last summer, worked great.. That...
Wellcome from G'burg.. had the pleasure of scout camp hammocking myself last week, good times..
Sounds like a plan..
Welcome from MoCo..
I don't think they would stay tied for very long... slippery stuff..
It seals fine once you get in the hammock. The weights in the corners pull it down. Might be a problem in a really narrow hammock, or if you hang your arm/leg/head off the side of the hammock......
I like my Knotty version... simple, easy to make, easy to get in/out/install/takedown... works great.

Hit reply too soon.. I am not the most experienced here, but I find my homemade tablecloth hammock really comfy - I'm 250# and 6'3"..
Welcome from Gaithersburg.. I am
At risk of forking this thread... using the sleeping bag as top quilt also yields more options if you are forced to go to ground..
If I could, I'd have an area of the basement set aside to leave my stuff hanging... or set it up in the family room to watch TV.. Wife doesn't see things my way, so.. can't wait until it warms up...
6' 3" here with big shoulders, and I appreciate the extra width of my wider tablecloth hammock.. sure, it flops in my face sometimes, but it also keeps stuff from getting kicked out, as well as adds...
UQ. Either go cheap (PLUQ) or dive right in with a warmer/lighter one.
I am a noob, so take it for what it is worth... but I did some similar research over the summer.
One option I saw that is similar to the Superfly was the Old Man Winter tarp - and it has three...
I liked your idea, enough that I am considering it.!! :)
That said, I am relatively undaunted by having to sew things (expert advice is available to me, should I need it, from my wife.. A long...
Opinions sought here... I plan to make a DIY tarp, something large-ish and with doors, more or less following the DIY Gear Supply "Winter Tarp" plans (attempting to end up with something like a WB...
Welcome to the Forums!
I am new to hanging myself, so when I've used my DIY hammock this summer (tablecloth gathered end) I've been switching head-left, head-right night to night, trying to figure out if I have a...
Pretty sure it is Polyester. And I found an earlier post - I misquoted, it might be 2.6oz. General rating for a single layer is 300#, according to folks who know more than I do... :):)
Made mine from a TableclothFactory blank, it is real comfortable (I'm 250# and 6'3"). I remember reading somewhere that they are 2.3oz fabric. Early on I figured I might add a 2nd layer of some...
Had no problems hanging in July at Camp Liberty (Heritage) in PA, or Camp Snyder in VA...
There is indeed a first time for everything; in this case, my first outdoor hangs, in my DIY hammock setup.. complete with $10 Harbor Freight tarp..
Spent 3 nights with each son at their...
~43" wide, about 62" long. I bought it from Sportsman's Guide, "New U.S. Military - issue Poncho Liner (Product: DODX-123876, Color: DIGITAL WD)"
Just got back from 3 nights using my new PLUQ - low 50s overnight in the part of PA where I was, great sleeping weather.
I am 6'2" and was completely comfortable with the folded over, single PL...
Another in MoCo here..
DIY gear supply, Arrowhead, many of the other cottage guys like BIAS, etc..
Awaiting materials from BWDD so I'll have a bug net ready for the the week after next at Camp Liberty in PA...
Sharp looking tarp. Is there a seam along the ridgeline, or is the camo part all one piece?
Check out a poncho liner for a cheap and pretty easy IQ.. Hard to beat $25 and some cord, though it its a bit bulky..
+1 on the Viking Husqvarna, from the expert quilter (my wife). In fact, I am prohibited from using her Husqvarna and relegated to the cheap Singer I picked up from a friend.. :-)
Welcome to the forum.. I'm on my annual Adirondack vacation, too bad it has been a little rainy for me to set up my hammocks so far this week.
Re: suspension, IMHO the webbing + cinch buckle is probably more "foolproof"... Whoopies need to be seated properly on your marlin spike hitch (MSH)+toggles... though you could use dutch buckles...
Careful.... it is addictive!!! :-)
I recently built a couple hammocks, then accessories, PLUQ... Not only the pride that comes from building your own stuff, it is empowering overall - I look...
I started my own hammock odyssey a couple months back.. One way to figure out if you like hanging - or whether you will notice a calf ridge, whether you think a wider hammock is worth any weight...
+1 on going the tablecloths route... I've made 4 of them in the last couple weeks with my kids - my son (who just bridged to scouts) is looking forward to trying his out at summer camp in a couple...
In another recent post, suggestion was for cheap straps, consider walmart, target, harbor freight, autozone or wherever and pick up a set of tie-down straps, cut off the ratchets and hooks.
Try...
