While I wont be joining you guys, turns out I will be hammocking after all that weekend! We are taking a trip down to Aransas for scouting purposes for some research, and the other graduate student...
I've had the same issue with the ridge down the middle and it definitely has to do with hanging tension/angle or perhaps with the distance between the trees. It happened to me when I was hanging...
I got one! I guess I just need to be more patient.
Nothing for me so far... :(
I sent my original email to the wrong address (I replied to the HH email instead of sending one to Keltie), so I sent another one a few hours ago, and here's hoping. They still have Backpackers on...
I sent them an email early this morning wanting to order an ultralight backpacker and am still waiting to hear back. Is that typical?? Should I have called instead? I fear I may have missed my chance...
Now I remember why I didn't do any backpacking last winter.
I wouldn't be able to make it that weekend anyway - gotta go on a scouting trip for crane research at Aransas.
Actually, here is the map of hunter's camps:
http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5208745.pdf
Davy Crockett National Forest closed areas include:
-- Longleaf hunter camp off...
Isn't camping restricted to designated areas for the Davy Crockett Forest (4C Trail) as well? Do we have a map of those sites or are they all closed too?
This from...
Sarge, your post on the LSHT list cracked me up today. It is so frustrating though!! Seriously, the best time to be out in the woods! Ugh!
I can't believe they're doing it so early! A good option for the LSHT is the 4 Notch Loop. There is a hunter's camp at one end, very close to parking. The loop is about 10-11 miles long, but you...
I was out hiking and tried to find that pond today near FS211A and failed miserably. I mean, I didn't try that hard - I walked off into the woods from the LLCL trail about where I thought it should...
Great, thanks for the clarification! How have the mosquitoes been out there? Are your hammocks treated or double layered? I'm considering treating mine with permethrin...
I'm still a little confused about the route - you're planning to camp the first night on the LLCL trail, but then hike back up to the trailhead (#1) to get on themain LSHT for saturday hiking?
And...
I will be watching this thread. I am scheduled to be on call that weekend, but it is usually pretty easy to switch. I'm hoping to do some kind of backpacking out there in the next few weeks anyway.
I might still try to make it - is it gonna be awkward if I'm the only chick?? Still gotta see how moving goes during the week.
Darnit, I just remembered I'm probably gonna be moving that weekend. I'll see if maybe I can make it for friday night, but it will depend on a number of factors...
I might try to make it! I've been away from the forum for a while, just happened to check back in today. I haven't done any hanging since Big Bend for spring break!!
I have actually hiked on the...
I'll have to find a petsitter too - not sure the dog would handle the heat very well.
Well I can't do it this weekend either, but what about next?
Yeah, the part that is open is the Little Lake Creek trail - from trailhead 1 to 4. Could work!
I'd be interested in something as well, haven't been out in months (nor have I been around the forum) - really bummed about the LSHT closure. It's getting hot fast, though!!
I think I'm going to buy one. The backyard hammock we have now is pretty junky and not wide enough for a diagonal lay.
Looks like a good time! I hope to join you guys next time if I can arrange a dog-sitter (she does not play well with other dogs). Sounds like maybe I should think about permethrin-treating my...
Capers Island is awesome, but on the weekends you will have a whole lot of people pull their boats up on the beach to hang out. The forested part of the island should be pretty secluded though - they...
Yeah it is a really awesome place! We camped at Cottonwood campground - a lot of people left thursday morning so we were able to find a site with two trees perfect for hanging two hammocks side by...
Very cool! I hope to make it to Colorado Bend soon. I just spent 3 nights in my hammock at Big Bend, which was the first time I had spent more than one night in a row in it. It just got better and...
Well, we are going to Big Bend! I got a petsitter for the dog, as they are not allowed on the trails. Still working on the planning, I think we are going with a few other friends and not sure how...
Thanks everyone! I was hoping to see some of the Hill Country, but it does sound like during spring break perhaps we should just go back to the Lone Star hiking trail. Actually, some friends are...
Similar to another post, but a different park - who has hung at Colorado Bend State Park? What could I expect as far as crowding (other people) at the back pack camping areas? Do these sites have to...
I ordered mine from Amazon, but haven't gotten around to using it yet!
Howdy from Aggieland! Welcome to the forum.
I think you've just about got me convinced.. now to just come up with the money to buy one for me and my BF... and sort through all the options! Full-length..3/4...sewn-through...baffles....aaahh!
I would like to try to make it, I will have to check with the boyfriend to see what his work schedule is for the weekend, and find somebody to watch the dog. As we are new to hanging, it would be fun...
Welcome from Bryan/College Station, TX!
Welcome from College Station, TX! I am also new to hanging - should be headed out this weekend with the BF for my first overnight.
Hi there, I am very new to hammocking - just ordered a Hennessy and am excited to try it out! Sleeping on the ground is just not that comfortable...so I am hoping that I will love the hammock as much...
Hey, wow, I am surprised to find so many Lone Star Trail users here! I just discovered the LSHT a few months ago, after moving to Bryan/College Station in July. I am just getting into hammocking -...
