I am thinking of joining you all. Due to personal issues it has been a couple of years since I have last been out camping. If I can get my gear together and keep life in check I will be out Friday...
Welcome from Northern Kentucky. Perhaps I'll see you down the gorge some time.
I have to see how the few days go, but might be interested in hanging out for a couple of days. Its been a while since I've camped there, so would like to check it out again.
Mine is 24 oz - just the tablecloth and continuous loops. I don't plan on taking it hiking - but its great for hanging out in the yard.
+1 on the 90" wide crinkle taffeta. Mine is floppy, but the most comfortable hammock I've tried.
As weight is no problem, its a great choice.
I have used Amsteel instead of the webbing. But you can finish it much the same: Attach a single steel ring to the webbing. (Form loops on both ends.) Then run the Amsteel through the ring as well...
I'll take one of these, too.
7. Can Stoves *D* - $20 ea 2 total
DIY, Alum, remote feed, Medium flame size, comes with bottle, standard cap and nipple cap, simmer ring and snuffer/lid....
Welcome from independence.
Hope you are over the headache soon! Looking forward to seeing you Gary.
Has the campfire gotten that rough?:scared:
21 pounds for everything isn't that heavy. How does it feel when you carry it a few miles? I have friends who will carry 40 lbs and others about 15 pounds for a weekend trip. Its all a matter of...
Someone else mentioned it in a thread above? It seems to be popular. What do others think?
Usually there is a combination of gear (stoves, Heine pots, etc) and libations in the raffle. I don't see why the meals wouldn't work if that's what you have to give away.
Yes, bring your own food and camp as/where you want. Usually there is a time when snacks are shared around - some will bring special goodies for that time.
You can participate as you wish. Join...
Be sure to check out the Hoosier hang - April 12-14. I'm sure you'll meet some locals there. There is a thread in the Trip Planning section.
I met Dave at the Hoosier hang a few years ago. seems to be a nice guy. I was under the impression that he stopped making gear, but maybe he's back in business again.
He does have some...
Not mine! But, yes, he did a nice job.
Its usually close to April 15. Looking forward to it.
Here is a link to a top quilt I will be making soon. It might be close to what you have in mind.
Congrats. I hope you have a pink hammock ready.
That's looking good!
The only good thing about having florescent orange straps is that they make it harder forget. I haven't forgotten any yet, but have found them on the trees several times during my last look around.
I will be hanging in the gorge this weekend. You can look for me camping somewhere south of the suspension bridge, along the Sheltowee. My plan is to explore some of the unofficial trails between...
Usually held close to tax day, April 15th.
The Eureka Chrysalis uses a vent in the tarp. Hard to see in the picture, but its there. You can see the vent well here, at about the 1:15 mark.
Thru-hiker.com has 5 oz, I believe. Outdoor wilderness fabrics carries various weights, but not 5 oz.
I'm thinking of doing that second weekend - 18th-20th. I'd be happy to meet up with you if you choose that week. I've seen much of the area and would flexible about the where.
Mike,
Glad to see you making progress. The hiking pole is a neat idea. I may be in touch for details some time.
I don't think attaching directly will work. If it holds most of the time, you...
Why no footbox? Its easy to add a triangle of material to the side of the hammock and, as you said, makes a lot of difference in comfort. With a footbox you can have a shorter (and so lighter)...
The SPE is no longer made, but ENO now makes a similar product.
Hello from across the river in Independence.
Here us one plan for a top quilt. Adapt as needed.
You can use a ripstop that has been coated. Most DWR ripstop should be downproof. Ask where you buy it and the seller should be able to...
I think this was pretty much answered above, but yes the hammock would become quite tippy with the suspension bars lowered to the height of the hammock "shelf". I don't think that such a hammock...
Thanks Shug. My knee was aching in sympathy.
I needed to get out in the woods today, but too much to do. Thanks for taking me with you.
This is one of those personal preference questions. The advantage of the 3/4 is weight and bulk savings. I've used a 3/4 quilt into the 20's without ever missing the last 1/4. I always bring a...
Pass It Forward. You take something you want and then post something of your own to give away in return. Its in the For Sale forum. Be sure to check the thread on PIF rules.
Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you are both off to a good start.
What Brian said. Have had no problems.
Sure looks good. The ridge under the knees is a common problem. How did you whip the ends? Sometimes a different whipping style will fix that problem.
I am looking for fellow hangers/campers who are interested in spending some time in the White Mountains. I'll be in the area until mid-August and would welcome some company on my hikes.
I...
Welcome from Independence! There are occasionally hangs in the Red River Gorge. A bit of a drive from London, but we'd be glad to have you along.
Welcome from an exiled New Englander.
I agree. Its the research time spent figuring out how to do a project that I enjoy. That and figuring out how to make the project work once I've screwed something up. To me the point of DIY is to...
I only have a little experience with silk and that was when I first experimented with hammocks.
I found it hard to find lightweight silk that was wide enough to make a comfortable hammock. ...
East fork is close. Shawnee is really nice. If you want to go south there is, of course, the gorge. There are also a few places in indiana within 2/3 hours driving.
Unfortunately all the...
The simple answer is no. Its really weather dependent - in bad weather I tend to hang as shown, in better weather I hang lower (or hang the tarp higher.)
With a 12 x 12 tarp you can probably go...
+1 Unless you want to get in and out of your bag while standing on the ground, a longer zipper is a must.
I know BosaiHiker has done a lot of hiking there with his kids. You might want to pm him - I'm sure he could help. I think there are a couple good sites near double arch (I haven't camped there but...
Ugly won't matter when the rain is pouring down! Congrats on your new tarp.
(But shed the fear of the thread injector - even I was able to learn to sew.)
Some of us use a soft shackle to attach the whoopie to the strap. I just started doing this, but haven't had any problem with wear yet. I don't see why your way wouldn't work.
I try to keep one...
